Wow, we took the kids to San Diego this past weekend and to LegoLand Monday. We stopped by the track and took some photos...

We went by there about two years ago and wanted to see any changes this year...

I will post them asap...

ESPN Classic has been showing old Wide World of Sports shows. Unfortunately, the cable preview guide doesn't include the details of what they're airing, and what's the likelihood that it's a USGP broadcast?? I suppose you could DVR it and check later.

I know this photo is not 1980, it's 79... Heikki Mikkola being chased by Bad Brad on the Kawasaki at the USGP. They both missed me by inches as they went by...

Cant even tell you how badass that pic is .Gonna go c/k out that link.

Yep...#17 Myerscough
Myerscough was always one of my favorites to watch, dude had a smooth style.

My friends got me interested in moto from the Carlsbad GP's, attended from 77' till the end.

Easily the best track I ever raced, I love hills, the current flat, smooth, jump, man-made tracks just don't quite get it.

No comments on the original GOAT eh?

Breker used those Norstar boots for a long time. I had a new pair in '74 . I thought they were pretty neat at the time.

I think that's 77 or 78. I beleive Noyce would have been running the 1 in 79.

I wrenched for a friend riding support class at the 77 USGP. On practice Saturday I missed one of the shots I'd have liked to have. Mikkola running the 1 and DeCoster running the 2 came over the drop off before the finish line side by side.

(Part 2)

You're right those never get old. The video of the 85 GP brings back a lot of memories for me as it was my first time ever to Carlsbad. Some things that pop into my about that day. We stood at the bottom of the big down hill all day and the speed that they would carry down the hill was crazy. I can still hear the sound of the factory Hondas in my head. Lechien was amazingly fast & I became an instant fan when I watched him in practice. The hills were a lot steeper than they looked on tv which was something I came to appreciate when I started racing there. Also the 250 support class was pretty entertaining as well. O'Mara, Ward, Brooks on a pre-production 86 CR 250 and Micky Dymond on a Husky. Man I miss that track.

Cool stuff!

I live about 15 minutes from Saddleback, and have been thinking about doing a track walk there, too.

You can still see most of the track.

Most likely we did... thanks for the props.

I took that pic as a 15 year old. Borrowed my fathers Minolta SLR and bought a roll of b/w Kodak Tri-X 400 film. He got so pissed off at me because I brought the camera back so dirty... the chores I had after that was endless LOL.

Had no idea what I was doing, but I raced there many times from the ripe ol' age of 14 (and as an adult), so I kinda knew where too stand that might be a cool photo...

A young Todd "Goat" Breker at the Pro Circuit - Tony D bachelor party at the shop circa 1983 - don't even ask what went on that night LOL.... I do know Mrs. Payton (Mitch's mom) was not too pleased the next morning regarding the condition of the shop

I used to play foosball with Goat at Family Billiards in Anaheim, in the '70s.

Had no idea who he was until he showed up one night in a Suzuki box van.

Supercross has fucked moto since its inception.

I, first of all, remember seeing Decoster, on TV with a blown shock at an early Carlsbad GP...I'm guessing 75 or 76. I was at my best friends house and was a whooping 11 yrs old and already, dirt bikes ruled my life even though I didn't quite own one yet.

Fast forward to the mid 90's when at a flat supercross inspired track in Keno Oregon, (where I thought it would be good to get back into moto on a YZ-490) I longingly looked over at the Four-Wheel Drive track that threaded up and down nicely through the ponderosa's, and wished like hell that I was lapping that relatively safe while gnarly outdoor inspired track.

Not sure. The guy in the pic is tall and Cole is about 6'-1". He rode for LOP on a Yamaha during that period and wore that same gear. I know he traveled out to CA for a number of races and that looks alot like him.

Took the kids to San Diego and Legoland again this year and stopped by the track again this weekend...

I must have just missed Todd by a few days....it would have been neat to see another person taking photos there...

My mom, dad and I made the summer vacation from Az to 5 USGPs back in the 70's and 80's and they are both gone now, so it was cool to have my 4 y/o boy with me this trip....10/12

Wow. What a blast of memories those pictures bring. All the people, the bean oil, the Wide World of Sports helicopter circling over head, you could stand at the edge of the track. I can almost taste the dirt.

Thanks for the post.

Gosh, I am almost into tears right now looking at this stuff. I remember reading about Marty Moates from his days on Ossa to winning the USGP. I miss that era of motocross, I miss when the sport was still young and new, I miss when I was still young and new. It is still bad ass but it just isn't the same. These whipper snappers know DeCoster as the team Suzuki guy. Well, I SAW him and Hannah beat the living snot out of each other at Unadilla in 1978 or 79 Trans-AMA. They hammered the exhaust pipes flat they rammed each other so much. That wasnt a race, IT WAS A WAR!!!!

How cum only 2 guys, maybe 3 to my knowledge (and 1 of them is retired) have that kind of fire in the belly, the attitude that "I came her to chew gum and kick asses, and since you got no gum I guess you're gonna get yer ass kicked today" mentality.

How cum I don't hear the ring ding no more? Nothing on God's earth sounded like a pack of ravenous 125cc Pros hauling ass towards the first turn... like killer bees from hell I tell ya. I miss privateers hanging it all out like Steve Wise did in 1976 to beat the top riders on way better bikes than he had.

Time waits for no man, but I still have my memories, and they can't take that away from me.
