I work on my 09 yz (that I bought new) and it is still pretty mint so why sell it and buy the same thing that happens to be a 2012 model? I think it says that is a good bike since I have been riding it for 2 years now and it isn't a pile of shit Smile

No doubt its a good bike, my point being all the 2 stroke dudes buy used and never upgrade to support the cause? And the yz has not really changed, but there are other options. Thats why the other factories are not making them anymore. That being said i am a fan of both types of bikes.

Nobody's really helping any cause right now. Bike sales overall are pretty much in the shitter and to buy a new 4 stroke at retail is pretty silly when you can just wait a little while and buy one of the dust collecters at just above or at cost. I've had a rough year or so and had to sell my bike this spring and went without this season. I'm getting back on my feet and will buy a used 2 stroke in the spring. I wish I could "help the cause" and buy new but it's not in the cards. I agree buy what you like and enjoy.

That is funny somehow? I'm not in the market for a new bike atm. If I could justify it I would have a new 250sx and a new 450f as well but I'm not really involved with some engine cause either.
I do think it is a shame the way displacement rules basically eliminated the 125 class though.

I love dirtbikes - 2 or 4 stroke. I can't afford the new stuff anymore as I have a daughter in college and one that starts driving next summer. I couldn't find any 4-strokes that would be in budget after restoring them to race-ready condition, so I will be racing a last gen CR250 next season. My last race bike was a 2010 KX250F. Loved it. Wish I could have kept it. But I have to make an observation. I don't see any huge leaps in technology from the CR to the KXF. Both have twin spar aluminum chassis with 47mm Showa twin chamber forks, basically the same linkage-type rear suspension, same kind of brakes, wheels, tires, both are still chain driven, etc etc. The CR is lighter with more power, but the KX is easier to ride. I'm confident I'll be just as competitive on the CR in the old and slow class. Usually top 3 with a good start. My choice was easy - race this bike or sit the season out.

I agree that in the pro class the 250 smoker will lose to the 450 every time with riders of equal abilities. The rules are what they are and I'm just as tired as you are of the constant threads about trying to change them. However, for us mere mortals in the local C, B, and yes, even the A classes I see the 'vintage' bikes on top of the podium regularly. Between motos we talk about a lot of stuff, have a lot of laughs, and I don't recall ever debating this topic with any of the many guys I ride and race with. My buddy with the brand new CRF450 appreciates my bike just as much as I covet his and wish I could afford one. The reality is that to buy one like his I'd have to spend 3 to 4 times what I have in mine and it probably wouldn't help my results. But I'm not Chad Reed either...

mxb2 isn't your RMZ a 2008? Are you saying anyone who doesn't buy a new bike every year shouldn't be able to voice their opinion?

I bought a new Husky 2-stroke last year and another one this year. There's a decent chance I'll replace one of them next year.

I'm not aware of any "cause" that I'm interested in being a participant of.

I am sick to death of every other thread turning into a 2-4 stroke pissing match. And it's always the same 10 idiots. Please, get involved with a vintage moto website or something and stop living in the past on here. By the way, I'm 45 and own and race a post-vintage, air-cooled, 83 Cr480 once in a while when I'm not racing my '09 Crf450r in real races.
Thanks.
2 strokes are still a very large part of amateur racing so saying that they are not worth talking about in an open forum is just plain silly.

Yep a 2008.5 rmz 450, very good bike, just got a 2012 kawy 450. Never said anybody should not have an opinion, the 2 stroke guys complain all the time about not having options and go buy a used bike, and wonder why the factories do not make many anymore? Plenty of options ,like excuses. The cause was a inside joke a poster had awhile back, saying riders should buy bikes(2 strokes ) to support the cause. That being said, hope to get a sx 250 ktm soon(new).

This is exactly why there are more and more two strokes at the track. Awesome! I am glad you chose to keep riding rather than hang it up and bitch. I'd be willing to bet you even have more affection for that CR too because you built it.

If your considering new KTM 250SX is $1500 less to buy off the showroom floor vs a 250SXF and a grand cheaper to do the top end at the end of the year.... I like that math.

Yep, had fun building it! Everything has been restored or replaced. Also put on the 2010 front fender and plate just to update the look. I'm waiting on a few little things to make it complete. I'll post a pic when it's finished. I have been drooling over the 250SX. When I have money again it will be on the list. One of my competitors let me borrow his 350 for a ride day in October when I was "between bikes". What a sweet ride! Wasn't sure I'd like the feel of the KTM but I felt comfortable after just a few laps. FYI, about 1/3 of the bikes on the line in the 30+ and 40+ classes are pingers.

My bike is 6 years old and still has the original motor except for piston/ring. Ever notice why 2 stroke guys buy used and 4 stroke guys don't? Wink

KTM 250SX:

217lbs + 50bhp + piston and ring replacement in 1 hour, costing 150 bucks

= no brainer.

gotwings is obviously 500guy in disguise, lol. GuyB has asked before if there was a need for a separate 2-stroke forum, but there doesn't need to be.

So, according to mxb2, if we all go out and buy new 2-strokes, the AMA will change the rules, and the OEMs will allow 2-strokes in Pro racing? Woohoo Maybe North Korea will become a free nation, and China will cancel all or our debts, lol.
Sales of 2-strokes are already through the roof:

Ebay comparison - http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Moto-Related,20/Bike-Sales-Per-Stroke-Cut…;

MXA line about KTM seeing a market big enough to import the 125 - http://motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/MXAS-2012-KTM-150SX-MOTOCROSS-T…;

General sales figures (blah blah) - http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-news/statistics/motorcycle-sales…;

Motorcycle sales are down, and continue to decline each year, mainly due to the economy and bike costs (IMO racing costs)It's hard to find the sales figures of 2 vs 4 stroke, but one way to tell is the number of 2s and 4s on the local starting lines nationwide.

Is there a 2-stroke cause? I don't know if it's a cause, or more of a consumer shift. In any case 2-strokes are on the rise, simply because 4-strokes are expensive (and all the other arguments), and 2-strokes are cheaper.

Burn, it might be his long lost brother from another mother but I don't think 500 Guy would hide behind another name. I noticed he hasn't been posting lately but he was getting a little disgruntled with some of the people here during the Warthogs meltdown. Jay's one of the good guys despite his view of the 2 stroke in pro racing. That said, and his lack of posting, I hope all is well as he had some health issues over the past few years.

Oh yeah, I liked the back-n-forth from Jay, and I hope he's doing okay (jk on the similarity with gotwings). Agree with you 100%
