My street bike has relatively loud pipes, though they are not straight pipes with no baffle. I can personally attest that the noise from my bike has saved me on a number of occassions. People that don't ride generally don't see nor are they looking for motorcycles on the road. Often times they will hear me long before they see me... a quick blip of the throttle as I approach someone I'm not confident has actually seen me and could possibly pull in front of or change lanes on me works quite effectively. I'm not supporting those that choose to have loud bikes simply to impress the world or annoy the world, but I do beleive they do have their place within reason.

Sorry, that's pure speculation, not evidence.

Have you seen people completely oblivious to loud sirens? Modern cars are alot better at sealing noise out. That, along with an air conditioner blowing hard, music playing... Hell, I've been driving along with my windows OPEN, wind buffeting, stereo going, I couldn't hear a Harley with loud pipes until it was right next to my window (after all, he is approaching from the rear, and his exhaust is pointing which way?).

I guess that's a good argument that ALL vehicles need straight pipes.

Seems to me, this is exactly in the line of what I've been talking about. We fight for stuff that just puts us in cross hairs of haters.
Well aren't you just the little socialist....

"save me government! protect me from myself! Make everyone wear helmets! MAKE THEM!!!!! Please protect me government! I need the security and saftey that only you can provide. Please goverment, help me!"

That's what I hear when I hear people support stupid laws in which the government is simply trying to legislate stupidity out of the public.

I'm with you on the sound issue.

I wear a helmet every time I'm on a bike (and usually full leathers), but I don't want the government MAKING me do it. It's called freedom!

freedom to succeed (live)...freedome to fail (die, because you were stupid).

the government needs to step back a few paces.

"loud pipes on harleys save lives!" b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t

You cant hardly hear them in a car unless they are literally right in front of you or next to you. Explain to me how loud pipes stops someone from pulling out in front of someone, or making a left in front of someone or lets you see them on the highway while they are dumb enough to stay in the blind spot (not pass, just cruise right there) they DONT..........

here is what loud pipes are for, period.

i like how someone also said freedom, the right to choose.... I have a right not to have the walls of my damn house shake at 1 am when some douchebag on a Big Dog feels the need to hammer the throttle. I love the "my rights" people. They only want whats right by them and if it isnt right by them, regardless of how many others its right by, "you are taking away my freedom". Freedom = responsibility to society. Be free, just dont piss off 30 people for your damn self interest.

The helmet thing I agree with if you aren't smart enough to wear one you aren't smart enough to ride. The exhaust issue though I think is important there have been a few times where I know the pipes on my bike got someone's attention that didn't see me.

Just getting peoples attention is what you want? Loud stereos in cars can say the exact same thing then. The other car didn't see me beside him, but my boom made him look. It does not mean all these people that hear you were gonna hit you if they didn't hear you. Right? I'd be willing to bet that the same percentage with quieter pipes and open without mufflers, have accidents with other vehicles. I don''t buy that it is saving any large percentage. Sure people hear you when you are beside them. But again, someone pulling out infront of you, not. Motorcycles have horns just like cars do. Advocates should be fighting for louder horns on motorcycles from manufacturers if they aren't loud enough.

i will never ride without a helmet.... but why do you want MORE rules? It's just one more step for them, just like the lead in our kid's motorcycles.... it's stepping stones towards a country that is not what it started out to be.

Maybe... I ride very defensively on the street and assume that no one can see me. When I'm coming up on an intersection or see someone ready to pull out of a drive, I watch their head movements and their eyes as best I can and assume they don't see me. If I'm not comfortable with what I see, the clutch is in, covering the brakes and I give the throttle a blip or two... staring them down until I KNOW they see me. There have been a number of occassions when it was obvious they were looking right through me as I see the startled look on their face when they finally hear me and then see me... speculation or evidence? I don't care, I know it works for me...

You would think it would be cheaper on us all if they let dumb asses ride without helmets. When they crash they'll just be dead instead of being laid up in a hospital bed on life support.

what is your version of childproofing a house? Are we talking about putting things that are dangerous out of reach or are we talking about bubble wrapping corners of tables and things that may in the event of contact cause a bruise?

Your walls shake but you can't hear them when you are on the street? Interesting. I hear street bikes all the time (the loud ones) and yes when they are coming from behind me.

How about the Big Dog in his jacked up diesel truck(that never sees dirt) with the 6" can coming out that is louder than a 450? Or the guy that has dual exhaust on his truck, or the guy with the little 4 banger rice burner that thinks if he makes it louder it is better. Fact is people as a whole like to bitch about something, anything.

Heres the problem I have... loud bikes are an EXTREME minority. How many bikes REALLY disrupt you in you r home? I have VERY few, and it last for 15 seconds, not enough for me to cry about MY RIGHTS.... ppffft. Thats the problem today, EVERYONE want's EVERYTHING THEIR way.

If you live in a house where loud n=bikes disrupt your peaceful living on a daily basis maybe you bought a house on too busy a street for your comfort....

It's like the neighbors of one of our local tracks trying to get it shut down... some developer decided they would develop a field adjacent to our local track... built house and somehow managed to sell them to people - the street closest to the track had houses LITERALLY 50' from a 4th gear straight. These people have the nerve to bitch, right letters and go to city meeting about the 'noisy track".

The track is being shut down, now some on here will go on about how loud 4 strokes killed another track.... no our CHANGING AMERICAN ATTITUDES shut down that track.

Hmmmm, I'll buy a home 50' from a moto track that has been there for 35 years then tell them they are a nuisance and shut them down.

That's like buying a home on main street in Sturgis then lobbying against loud bikes...

Good POST! At least YOU get it!

We the PEOPLE are our own worst enemy.
We create all this by thinking that evertime we don't like something we can just get the Govt to fix it.
That's sick.
Wait til PITA gets all fishing banned, then beef and chicken. (think hard about that one)
I don't need anyone telling me what I can and can't do.
We send our children to fight for our freedom and then we vote in politicians to take it away.
Jacked up!

Actually neither one of you guys get it. Here is why. You guys talk about freedom and our soldiers fighting to keep the freedom. Well, they actually fight for our democracy. Thus, why you are wrong. We the people of the US, that don't want loud motorcycles far out weigh your numbers. So in this case, why are the rules the way they currently are? Because lobbyists from the AMA went and spent a ton of money to keep the rules the way they are. So it is a smack in the face about what you guys are spouting. Our rights as voters are being infringed for exaclty what you talk about. We want them quiet and your politicians are getting paid by lobbyists to not make them quiet.

Our country isn't about "majority rules", in fact it is the exact opposite (ask nerd if you don't believe me...he educated me on that subject right here on this board, and he's exactly right).

I somewhat agree with that, but really, it's "money" that rules. It doesn't matter if it is the majority or minority. Who ever pays the most to the politicians (criminals) wins. I only wish my law of anyone caught paying or accepting money for laws to be passed, should go to jail for bribery. That is all it is. Pure and simple. It would be for the people, by the people, if we would outlaw that, and make terms only 8 years max for house and senate. No way should they sit there for 50 years. They usually start out as a person who will try to change things, and then realize it doesn't happen when you have 90% of them on the payroll of lobbyists and have been there for years and years.

thats because a car has the motor running, the sound of air flowing around as it moves down the road, major sound proofing to eliminate a low frequency specifically from road noise created by the tires, radio playing...... so much ambient noise that unless you are DIRECTLY in the exhaust path ie behind or beside the exhaust side, you DONT HEAR THEM, not enough to go oh, maybe I shouldnt make a left, or maybe I shouldnt pull out into traffic.

a house, the tv is on.... its relatively a VERY quiet place and is NOT designed and specifically sound proofed from exhuast tones......

and for the record, I owned a Big Dog (dont get me started on those things reliability!) and i changed pipes to something LESS obnoxious!

loud pipes do NOT save lives, period, end of story, anyone that says they do is trying to justify a mystic and image... see the video for a better explaination.

my bitch is just the fact that attention whores think 120 db exhuast on a harley ect are a safety feature and everyone should have to deal with it just because THEY want it loud. again, 1 person pisses off 30 but he should have his rights, what about the 30?

Nobody supports the idea of "freedom from governmental intrusion and oppression" more than I do.

The loud diesel guy, the ricer, the Harley Fags... They're all equally obnoxious, and I really do think it comes down to a need for attention; the "look at me, I'm a badass" attitude.

But, the Us vs. Them mentality comes into play with people complaining about bikes. Most people drive cars. Most cars are quiet. Hell, most bikes are quiet. Most Harleys are not! And when people see that the gross majority of "them" are the offenders, it's pretty easy to see why people get up in arms about loud bikes. And amongst car people, bikes are all lumped together. Fair? No, the noise ordinances should be enforced equally across the board, but you can see how it all comes about.

Helmet laws protect insurance companys from large payouts due to vegetables lying in hospital beds. To be fair, an insurance company (as well as emergency rooms) should have the right to refuse to pay for or service some idiot that chooses to ride on the street without a helmet....but by the same token, a rider should have access to insurance that WILL underwrite them while riding without a helmet (the cost of such insurance would of course be high). Government involvement in the free market ususally doesnt work out well and can be oppressive....just sayin....

Fact is people as a whole like to bitch about something, anything.

thats because a car has the motor running, the sound of air flowing around as it moves down the road, major sound proofing to eliminate a low frequency specifically from road noise created by the tires, radio playing...... so much ambient noise that unless you are DIRECTLY in the exhaust path ie behind or beside the exhaust side, you DONT HEAR THEM, not enough to go oh, maybe I shouldnt make a left, or maybe I shouldnt pull out into traffic.

a house, the tv is on.... its relatively a VERY quiet place and is NOT designed and specifically sound proofed from exhuast tones......

and for the record, I owned a Big Dog (dont get me started on those things reliability!) and i changed pipes to something LESS obnoxious!

loud pipes do NOT save lives, period, end of story, anyone that says they do is trying to justify a mystic and image... see the video for a better explaination.

my bitch is just the fact that attention whores think 120 db exhuast on a harley ect are a safety feature and everyone should have to deal with it just because THEY want it loud. again, 1 person pisses off 30 but he should have his rights, what about the 30?
Maybe I have better ears but I hear loud bikes coming from behind me. I wouldn't be to quick to characterize it as a safety feature and I doubt that is what the majority of them would say.

What about the guy with the bumping stereo? Seems there are more of those than loud bikes on the road.

For what it is worth I have none of the above mentioned in this thread but I used to and I like it loud and figure I have a lot of other shit to worry about than noise. Miedos is good for about a thread a week on this shit.

The right to have loud exhaust on streetbikes.

Seems to me, this is exactly in the line of what I've been talking about. We fight for stuff that just puts us in cross hairs of haters.
Loud stereos will get you tickets in many places. Watch a cop pull up to a booming car, the car will quickly lower the level. Loud bikes, I don't think anywhere? Could be wrong, well except motocross tracks, you may get a sound ticket. I keep bringing these things up until the day we start fighting to further our sport instead of hindering it. Haters grow more and more yearly. We stay dumber and dumber yearly. Until our sport gets out of it's own way, it won't ever be a NASCAR.

Someone had asked if I went to Daytona bike week. I didn't get that chance. Life is crazy trying to run businesses and get a outdoor series started. But I came across an AMA district letter trying to fight helmet laws. Made me think. Duh.

Post a reply to: Can anyone explain why we fight for stupid rules like these??
