Look on ebay for a Canon 1D Mark II or Mark IIN (about $800), a 70-200 2.8 lens, can go with a used Sigma for about $500. You can always upgrade to the Canon 70-200, but that package will get you a long way. You can pick up a 50 mm 1.4 for portrait work down the road.

For the kind of stuff you'll be shooting (in dimly lit arenas), good fast lenses and a really good flash will be as important (or maybe more so) than the body itself.

The only time your 70-300 might struggle is with low light - night time and/or inside arenas for SX.

I have a D5000 with the 70-300VR. It works pretty well and you could probably get those two together for less than $1000. A 70-200 f/2.8 would also be good although a bit more money as mentioned above.

It will be for taking pics at AX races I'm assuming... right Denny?

(that will give you photogs more helpfull insight)

Maybe you photogs could give some tips... like taking pics during practice... is there usually more light at that time without all the spectators... and less smokey?

Season started off pretty good, eh Denny?

Kinda sucks there's not too many Fri Sat races this season!

We shoot with D700's and various lenses and lighting. A must for this stuff is a 70-200 2.8 It is a very versatile lens that you can do a lot of different photography with. From there just start collecting fast, sharp glass.
