CRF450 detonation...hello YZ250

Edited Date/Time 7/23/2014 6:13am
Hey everyone, this is my first post here. Last week I detonated my CRF450 so badly at the local practice track I ended up with a hole the size of a baseball in the bottom of the motor. Seeing as buying a new motor would cost more than the bike is worth (it's a 2008) I am in the hunt for a YZ250. Anyone gone back to the two-stroke after riding the 450 for years? I am a 26 year old A rider and seem to have a rough time keeping the fours running, so I figured I would go to something that doesn't require the same level of maintenance. However, I haven't run a two-stroke in about 10 years so I am a little hesitant based on the differences in the riding styles. Anyone have luck with this sort of transition?

I sold my 2010 YZ 450 to my son, not because of maintenance issues, but because the 4 strokes are porkers. Picked up a 2005 YZ 250 smoker for 2300$, a set of 2006 YZ250F forks, revalve, add an Eric gore big bore kit, and I can run with any of the 4 strokes in acceleration,, pick any line I want in a corner, and not worry about holes in the bottom of my engine cases banckrupting me. Down side: The smoker requires more attention to ride properly, you can't loaf into a corner, it demands you be aggressive for it to work well. I may never go back to a thumper.....

When was the last time you did some motor maintenance on the 08? Go for the smoker though. You can always sell it if you don't like it.

March of this year. I have a 2013 450 as well but haven't had much luck with the hondas so the move to the YZ is looking better and better.

2 weeks ago I witnessed a similar thing happen with a 2008 CRF450.... it was ugly!!!

Dude, dont worry about the power difference regarding 2 vs 4 stroke.... get a YZ250 and twist the throttle and insert smile!!!!

unfortunately I've seen plenty of CRF450's put their rod through the bottom of the motor, I'm assuming you meant detonate like a bomb and not pre ignition detonation. I've gone back and forth a lot the last few months between 2t and 450 and while the 2t is fun, I prefer the 450 overall.

Same boat here. I will be back at the track soon with a 2015 crf 450 and a like new 2002 yz 250. Not only for the fun factor but if one has issues it is nice to have the other.

I converted from an 08 YZ450f to a 13 Yz250 2t. Took me about 4 rides to get comfortable on the two stroke (never rode one before) and then it all started to click. I'm a fan of the 2 stroke now. I won't hate on the 4 strokes but I understand the complaints against them now having ridden both. The 450 is easier to ride and there is no replacement for the bottom end power but you adjust with the clutch. I don't regret my decision. But I'm no where near an A rider.

not sure what you mean by "crazy maintenance costs" ive had pro riders riding 150 hrs on a bottom end on the hondas without issue, sounds like you just dont take care of your stuff. whatever bike you decide to get, change the fluids and airfilter every ride

450: top end every 30-40 hrs for and A rider and 3 top ends to a bottom end, oil and air filter every ride

250 2 stroke, top end every 20 hrs for an A rider and 3 tops to a bottom end(with cylinder replating), oil and air filter every ride

maintenance costs are the same if you get the same deal on parts for both bikes.

that being said, i ride both a 2004 RM250 and a 2006 CRF 450 and there really isnt any cost difference if youre doing it right. yes they require different riding styles and i notice i am much more aggressive after getting off the 2 stroke, over jumping everything and charging much harder on the 450 lol, braking takes some time to get used to, as the two stokes dont have much engine braking and youll have to compensate by using more brake.

I'm guessin it threw a rod? Those 450s are usually pretty sound. Just sayin. How much would it cost to get it fixed?

A YZ250 is always a good bet. I imagine you could get a good 2-stroke for less than $2000.

Get a KTM 300 or a 250 and add the 300 kit!
+1
also im curious to why more people dont lean towards a ktm250/300 than the yz. i know the SSS suspension is nice, and i've ridden them before and they are awesome bikes. but you cant ignore the fact that the ktm has YEARS of r&d in it over the yamaha. and i was able to pick my ktm up cheaper than a yz to begin with as well. just a thought.

I have both and switch back and fourth on a regular basis. I am from the 4-stroke era so it took a couple months to learn how to make the 2-stroke go. Now that I can ride them both equally well my conclusion is, anyone will be faster on a 4-stroke. 4-strokes allow things that aren't possible on a 2-stroke. The 2-stroke upped my skill level and took a good bit of effort to learn to do what I wanted with it but that just made me even quicker on the 450. Nobody will ever be faster on a 2-stroke than a modern 4-stroke. If they say they are I will call them a lie to their face.

-If you care about getting every last bit of performance/result out of your racing I wouldn't choose a 2-stroke as my most lethal weapon. You're giving up too much of an advantage to the 4-stroke competition.

- If the fun matters more than the result, 2-stroke all the way!

Just my opinion. If you say you are faster on a 2013 yz250 than you are on a 2013 YZF450 I'd say you are lying. Period.

I ride a yz 250 because thats what I am fastest on and I started on 2 strokes 30+ years ago. I have yet to ride a 450 that I liked so I just bought a 2015 250 sx. How I would ever be faster on a pos heavy turd is beyond me even with my 30 years of riding. Your logic makes no sense.

Not to bash a (A?) guy, but if you have had reliability problems with 450 Hondas (2008 and 2013?) it has more to do how you have serviced those than actual bike...We have had four strokes since 2000 and only had one engine failure (YZF250 in 2001, because those didn't have rev limiter). Just change the oil regularly and keep the air filter clean and you are good.

PS: I'm much faster on CRF450 than on a 300 two stroke.
