Hey everyone, this is my first post here. Last week I detonated my CRF450 so badly at the local practice track I ended up with a hole the size of a baseball in the bottom of the motor. Seeing as buying a new motor would cost more than the bike is worth (it's a 2008) I am in the hunt for a YZ250. Anyone gone back to the two-stroke after riding the 450 for years? I am a 26 year old A rider and seem to have a rough time keeping the fours running, so I figured I would go to something that doesn't require the same level of maintenance. However, I haven't run a two-stroke in about 10 years so I am a little hesitant based on the differences in the riding styles. Anyone have luck with this sort of transition?

Dude, dont worry about the power difference regarding 2 vs 4 stroke.... get a YZ250 and twist the throttle and insert smile!!!!
You must have missed my "proof of life " thread a few weeks back.

450: top end every 30-40 hrs for and A rider and 3 top ends to a bottom end, oil and air filter every ride
250 2 stroke, top end every 20 hrs for an A rider and 3 tops to a bottom end(with cylinder replating), oil and air filter every ride
maintenance costs are the same if you get the same deal on parts for both bikes.
that being said, i ride both a 2004 RM250 and a 2006 CRF 450 and there really isnt any cost difference if youre doing it right. yes they require different riding styles and i notice i am much more aggressive after getting off the 2 stroke, over jumping everything and charging much harder on the 450 lol, braking takes some time to get used to, as the two stokes dont have much engine braking and youll have to compensate by using more brake.
A YZ250 is always a good bet. I imagine you could get a good 2-stroke for less than $2000.
also im curious to why more people dont lean towards a ktm250/300 than the yz. i know the SSS suspension is nice, and i've ridden them before and they are awesome bikes. but you cant ignore the fact that the ktm has YEARS of r&d in it over the yamaha. and i was able to pick my ktm up cheaper than a yz to begin with as well. just a thought.

-If you care about getting every last bit of performance/result out of your racing I wouldn't choose a 2-stroke as my most lethal weapon. You're giving up too much of an advantage to the 4-stroke competition.
- If the fun matters more than the result, 2-stroke all the way!
PS: I'm much faster on CRF450 than on a 300 two stroke.
