I caught up with Bob Hannah last week and got a couple good stories out of him. If you want to find out more about this photo (Thanks Todd Huffman for tracking this one down!), take a listen. WinkLaughing

Thanks, that's a classic Tripes vs. Hannah photo.

The last story was a year too late. JS7's attorneys could have referenced. "AMA vs Yamaha/Hannah Falsified Medical Release Form - Decision of 19xx"

And: Thanks for the interview. Hannah always has great stories.

Putting that sandwich on Tripes' front fender made me laugh like hell.

Hannah is a great story teller. I could listen to guy go on for hours.

I saw him screwing with Howerton at the Road Atlanta National down in 1981. This was back when you could work the dirt on the other side of the gate. McCarty was cleaning up just in front of Bob's gate and unearthed this huge rock. He picked it up and looked at Bob. Without speaking, he (Hannah) pointed down the line, so McCarty starts carrying the boulder down the line. Then Bob puts up a hand, as if it say "stop". It was right in front of Howerton's gate. McCarty looked at Bob like, "you can't be serious". He didn't drop it, but everyone who witnessed it was laughing their asses off.

I love to hear Bob's story of the "Saddleback Massacre" where he and Howerton traded paint that one day...but I'd love to hear Kent Howerton's side of the story!

Kent Howerton would tell you that after he dove inside and rammed the 100, Hannah would then turn back into him as he went by and tried to wrap his arms around Howerton's waist and try to remove him from his machine as he himself was already going down. Nuttin doin as Howerton nailed the throttle Hannah's hands got ripped from his waist and one went into the spinning rear wheel and got shot out real quick. Looked to me like he broke it. But Hannah got back up and went after him. I saw it first hand at the age of 13.

I think you got it the other way around 40Plus...It was Bob who t-boned Howerton who went down and tried to grab Hannah on the way. Howerton is #1 in that pic. Bob #100

And no one who races today would finish a race if they had to ride the bikes they rode back then.

Its always best when the epic story teller has his people around him when he tells the story, preferably people who were actually there when it happened.

They giggle and laugh uncontrolably and help the story teller remember and everybody has a good laugh. It makes the listener feel like he is part of the group.

I think theres a youtube vid of Hannah at Daytona with Reed sitting beside him and of course McCarty behind him, and Bob is being Bob much to the delight of Reed and Bobs guys from back in the day.

And none of today's riders would last 2 laps on the old school tracks like Unadilla, Plymouth, etc. Hell, they'd probably take one look at those gnarly ass tracks and would DNS.

Let's not go too overboard about how today's guys wouldn't last two laps on that old machinery. I LOVE old school mx and I'm no kid, but I also remember Hannah refusing to jump a SX triple in about 86? I think we can have equal respect for both eras, because I think most of the 70s guys would leave in an ambulance trying to get around a modern SX track. Different eras, different machinery, different tracks... but the cream always rises to the top.

Funny how back in the day, nobody seemed to have "setup issues" every single time their results were shitty lol. production bikes of today are light-years better than ANY of the works bikes of old, yet the bike is ALWAYS to blame when someone throws out an anchor during a moto. Bob Hannah raced the '86 RM250, for god's sake lol. That bike was nothing BUT "setup issues".
