How many of you older guys still ride? After a 30 year hiatus from racing BMX, I am back at it. I was kind of waiting to see if my kids would really dig the sport before investing in too much for me. If you ever thought you were in excellent shape, go try to pedal 100% an entire lap on a BMX track, you will leave humbled! I am having tons of fun going to the races with my boys though! Here is my ride:

No racing but I still like to hit some jumps when time allows on my S&M, my boy is 13 now and never showed much interest in BMX until we went to a park with a foam pit a couple of months ago, he nearly had flips in half a day, kids hey.......

Hell yeah dude that's rad. I've been to the track myself quite a bit lately and have taken my son as well. Pretty cool feeling to have it come full circle like that for me. And you are right I'm definitely not in the shape I used to be. I've posted my bikes before but here ya go.

1996 GT Auburn CR-20RX (I raced a 92 and a 94)

2003 Specialized S-Works Cruiser (Just loved this bike. I was originally looking for a late 90's Specialized when I discovered this rare bmx bike.)

I just started again after switching to motocross in 1984......I'm racing the 40+ cruiser class and my son is racing the 5 and under class. great fun and torture on your lungs if you get a good start and ride for pride...lol. I'm on a 24' Haro SR 24 and my son is on a Red Line flight micro mini. We have both won a few heats and mains this year in our classes. BMX rocks.

30 y/o never stopped, actually recently rode a couple contests too. Although now I find myself dabbling with other disciplines of two wheels more. Did some MTB XC racing this summer, moto, anything with two wheels!

I still ride the pump track from time to time but stopped racing a few years ago when my son got back in to moto. Left the track i built and left the drama behind with it. I still make custom hubs for riders from time to time when i get the requests for them. Working on a 20mm instant with disc brakes currently.

BMX is coming back strong with the lil groms here on the west coast. Can't wait to get grandkids into it. You know, wrapped sprinter van, multiple bikes, trick stands, a hired wrench. Just the basics, just the basics.....nothing over the top like a semi. Evil

Loving this thread. I don't think the site owner minds too much too Smile With the weather on us, we are officially already racing indoors up here in WA. Here is my boys a couple of weeks ago (8 and 5 years old):

Here is me and the boys just practicing a couple of weeks ago on the outdoor track while it wasn't raining:

Still ride at 47. Haven't raced since 87. Started riding ramps and skatrparks again back in 2002 with my son and still love to pump around some bowls and catch an air frim time ti time. My boy had his latest edit drop just yesterday. Take a gander if you'd like.

Since we are here. Any of you guys recommend some good BMX gear / helmets for both myself and my son?

Fly f-16. Cheap and sturdy. Fly helmets are decent for bmx for the price, tld makes a great bmx helmet as well, but most guys that ride moto use their moto helmets. Modern tracks are hard on impact. Asphalt turns dont make it anymore pleasant either.

I used to race from 8 to 13 years old, but the intensity got to me after a while and after a pretty bad injury I started just riding dirt and park. Here's a couple recent photos, the moto style shows throughLaughing

Check out the Troy Lee D3 helmet or the Bell Full 9, you can just use your motocross pants/jersey/gloves, buy the inexpensive knee/shin guards(fox makes nice ones). I use my underjersey chest/spine protector, and my 4 year old uses a fox body armor set up. Also a good pair of biking shoes help, I really like 5/10 shoes. Jr. has eaten shit really, really, really hard a few times(cartwheeling tomohawks and gnarly highsides in rythem sections, as the steering head angles are really steep on the bikes) I'm glad I make him wear his full body amor, especially on the pavement bowl turns. He's taken some GNARLY slams and got up and finished, where if he was just wearing a jersey and pants w/o armor I'd be taking him to the hospital, then selling his bike....lol. Here is a good photo of the kit I have Mason wearing, the body armor has been amazing, I think it was about $ 100 from Fox, his helmet is a Bell Sanction($90) and he's got fox pant($50) and gloves($25). He had a nice jersey but it got shredded in a nasty pile-up in a ashphalt bowl turn.

Cooks Bros. those things bring mad money these days. If you can find one.. Friend of mine raced factory titan in the 80's. Still had 2 titans never assembled, still in the boxes they were shipped in. Ive got a couple of kastans with the uni fork. Sweet rides.

Is Flowood BMX still there? I wish I knew you when I lived out in Brandon a couple years ago, that pump track looks fun! I went ahead and built my own track for me and my boys last year in our back yard. Here's our tack and my bike..

Flowood track is long gone. I built the Ridgeland track 6 years ago. Im in the process of signing the papers on the old Presto manufacturing bldg on Presto lane in Jackson. 1 mil. Sq ft of open floor space. Building another bmx track and an indoor mini moto track for 150's and under.

1983, back then the holy grail of BMX bikes was a hand built JMC. My father and I built this little beauty piece by piece, I even laced the wheels. I got the frame from Santa, and all the other parts as gifts from relatives that Christmas. I think even back then, the parts total was like $ 700. The JMC bikes go for BIG money now days, I would kill to have this bike to hang in my living room....I broke the frame on it launching out of a concrete drainage ditch to flat, I though my Dad was going to kill me as I was forbidden to ride it on the street. But riding anything else just felt like such a peice of shit, I think this bike weighed like 12lbs. I can remember that I was national # 17, 8 expert. This is @ Charloviox Michigan.

Sweet! God luck...there are a lot of good guys out there that I met. You may want to stop by the R/C track out there and talk to the owner, he was able to set up a pretty good deal with the city and I'm sure would help you out with that aspect.

The girl from this video and her boyfriend (also in the final scene of this video) also ride moto at our local track.
