DeCoster was the man!

Rick Johnson

While not the best, Chuck Sun was "pretty good" too....

That USGP video made me realize two things
1) Damn I miss Carlsbad...that place was brutal (brutal fun!)
2) Damn I miss 500cc two-strokes!

Please, by all means, come in and drop the irrelevant Belgian's name into the hat. Go right ahead.

Joel Smets: 5x 500cc World Champion - 1x ISDE Champion

Joël Smets crushed Emig at the MxDN in 1997:

Ooh yeah same thing happened at the MxDN in 1995!

Smets was awesome, but this is about the old 500 2 stroke class, not 600cc thumpers.

That from the 600cc thumper is totally correct thats something I totally forgot when posting!

PS: I posted that MXDN video from 1997 specially because in the MX Media, Emig told everyone he would smoke that Husaberg Tractor. But case closed Tongue

Although he didn't put in the time on a 500 as most of the others mentioned ... he was a master on the bike. In the US 500 series he toyed with Stanton and Ward seemingly passing them at will. At the two 500 USGPs he annihilated the GP field each time ... and any US riders that showed up.

maybe not the string of titles as some,
but both were JUST unreal to watch on a open 2 stroke.

Thread about best 500cc two-stroke riders of all time.

MxMatti posts Belgian guy on 610cc fourstroke.

Case closed.

I'm going to go post about Johnny Campbell and his XR600 at Baja in the best 125cc riders of all time thread. Just need to figure out how to put some sort of nationalistic spin on it in the process.

Hey, did an American guy bang your sister and never call her again? Just wondering.

Alan King on his 500 Suzuki was pretty spectacular to watch. Allen Berlutti was a beast, Donnie Cantaloupi, Eric McKenna too, Arlo Englund, Rick Burgett, just some 500 masters off the top of my head.

JMB also smoked everyone in the 1st moto at the 1992 Des Nations in Australia. Don't think he could be bothered in the 2nd moto.

Agreed, there were a lot of great riders over a long span of time. Different eras, different bikes. Dificult to pick the best but all of those you mention plus Rick Johnson are my choices.

Dave Thrope was a decent 500cc rider. A lot of people either don't know or choose to forget that he actually beat David Bailey at the '85 Des Nations.

People also haven't forgotten Thorpe getting beat by O'Mara in the '86 Des Nations. Thorpe did have a problem with his front brake and he was carrying an injury that day.

Still one of the top 500cc riders in the world.
