Okay, what would you consider the best 4-stroke and 2-stroke ever built:

4-stroke: 2006 KX450F
2-stroke: 1986 CR125

There, I'm done.

A 2006 KX450F was the only 450 I've ridden and it was a totally cool bike. It felt slower than my CR, and was amazingly easy to ride. All Cr125s from 84 to 97 were the baddest 125s I've ridden, but I had 2 86 CRs, so I'm kind of partial. I would say the best CR250 motor would be a choice between the 91 and the 99 IMO.

I had 86,87,88,89,90, 91 and 92 Cr125's I loved everyone of them. I did jump on a buddies 86 CR 125 in about 91 and it did feel like a beast. My 2006 CRF 450 was pretty badass I had no complaints except that I crashed and it crushed the entire left side of my body. But I geuss end of the day Elsinore dirt was partially to blame for that. Since I'm a small bore lover, for the 4 stroke I'd have to go with a scatterbomb 250F, just not sure which one as I'll probably never buy another one. To me, they fit that perfect bike category (obviously we are throwing reliability out the window here) in between a 125 and 250 2 stroke.

Then along comes the KTM150. Most fun bike on the planet.

When some of you mention older bikes, it brings up the 1987 CR250 that the magazines still rave about. I have one and while it is a pretty nice bike, it definitely does not hold a candle to todays offerings. At the time though it was way ahead of the others.

The best 2 stroke I ever rode was a 99 YZ125 I borrowed from Todd Gardner after my Kx125 blew up in practice. What I didnt know was the bike had a 167 kit installed. Holy shit, that bike ran harder and pulled longer than any bike I had ever rode up to that point in my life. After the first moto on it, I had a huge shit eating grin, and walked over to ask Todd who did the port work on the engine, b/c I had to have an engine like that. It was then that he informed me that it was a 167..

The best 4 stroke..hmm well every one that I owned brought massive fail
The 02 Vertimati C501 I was sponsored blew up religously at the 15min mark of running time.
The sponsored 03 YZ250F.. It blew up about every 6 weeks on average.
09 YZ450.. blew up on the 3rd ride. catstrophic engine failure and yamaha refused to stand behind it
I did ride an 11 CRF450 though that was pretty awesome for a 4 stroke. It was good enough that it has me considering buying one, since they can be found new right now heavily discounted(and actually cheaper than a new KTM 2 stroke). When it blows up I will just do a 500af conversion to it

Oh if I bought another bike right now, it would be a 150SX. There is no better bike IMO.

2008 Honda CRF450R and 2011 KTM 150SX way different bikes but both in my arsenal and the 150 always gives me a smile.
Now the 150 gets way more workouts too....

Best bike I ever owned for its time was an '81 RM-125. Light years better than the '80. Can't speak to the 4-strokes.

Two-Stroke - tie : 2012 TM300MX italian hand built like a ferarri or 1981 Maico 490

Fooper - 1986 XR250R, you could sink it in a lake and not change the oil for 5 years, and it would still start on the first kick.

Best 4 strokes? hmmm... 2012 Kawasaki KX250F or 450F
best 2 stroke, small bore KTM 150SX, big bore i think the newer yami's are easier to ride then the ktm 250sx.
KTM 300 is a fun trail bike with a heavy flywheel on it.

Personal fav to ride though is either of the Kawasaki's

LOL. Was gonna say the 81 Maico 490. But I'm partial to the 83 480 because its been so reliable and such a good bike for so many years for us. Just like the trusty XR200.

2T - The current TM250. Less power than the 300 , but more instant ZIP. Scary fast and super specc'ed. Love our 2009.

4T - Hate to admit it but the current KTM 250F GP bike is probably as good as it gets.

The 06 KX450 had a 4-speed tranny, your riding style must of liked that.

Was also thinking the KX500 deserves to be on the 2 stroke list. Won four MX championsips under Ward, Kiedrowski and LaRocco. And, the mighty KX500 dominated the Baja 1000 from 1988-1996. Then it was dethroned by the XR600.

Wardy on the KX500s from 86-89 was legendary. I agree they are impressive machines. Wish they still made them.

Also agree the Baja dominance will be tough to beat...they were the top bike for what seemed like forever.

I like my CR500, but I sure would like a mint 86 KX500.

A few years back at Washougal a guy in the over-50 class was racing a Maico 490. He was racing against all modern bikes and was in mid-pack. He was slowest in the whoops. A testiment to how good those Maico 490's are.

Here's pics from either the over-40 or over-50 class at Washougal during the amateur races. The guy on the 81 Maico was running mid pack against all modern bikes.
