Matthes is on Twitter talking about some kind of clash between gear manufacturers...and saying how they shouldn't put Seely & Short in "this kind of position", and that the companies can't help but "continue to be dicks to each other".

Any word on WTH he's talking about? Are TLD & Fly going at each other? Do the team graphics at Honda say Fly or TLD?

He's talking about the new casual gear deal that Honda HRC has with Fox. They produce the team shirts, jackets, and hats, and Seely and Short have to wear the stuff even though they aren't personally sponsored by Fox. TLD was the casual wear sponsor of HRC for several years before Fox came along.

Edit: Added Matthes' tweets to the original post.

probably be a good idea to read the fine print in the contract before you sign it WinkWink

The sport-shirts/casual wear is via a separate contract between Honda and Fox. It's Honda's call.

He's not arguing the fact of the contract between Honda and Fox. It's about Fox slapping a huge Fox logo across the team gear that Seely and Short have to wear. Knowing the different Honda riders are sponsored by other gear companies, Fox could've had more class to have their logos a little less conspicuous instead of across the chest. A nice little fox head on the sleeve would've sufficed.

This is easy to solve... just force all team riders to wear Hondaline. Ask Rick Johnson...

Ha, Cole should wear a pick-up kit to press conferences, autograph signings, and what not. Just jeans and his jersey. Anything in his contract state he HAS to wear the team's casual gear to those things?

It's definitely a weird situation, and either side has legitimate arguments. If anything, it makes Honda look bad by having the deal in place.

It's Honda's deal and they pay the bills for those guys. On the bike, they wear the gear they're paid to wear.

It's Honda's Team and it's part of their deal.

I remember back in the 80's when Honda decided that all team riders would be "required" to wear Hondaline gear. The ugliest, least protective, most amateur looking gear in the universe. The riders basically said, "no".

Honda said, "ok".

Fox is more of a causal wear company than a gear company these days. Its not like Fox is going to put out ads with Cole and Shorty in them. Mathis is making a mountain out of a molehill.....

Only the biggest gear company in the world. If you don't think that gear companies care that their marquee athletes are forced to wear logos of a competitor, you're wrong.

So are the riders being forced to violate their personal sponsor contracts with the Honda contract? How are the contracts written? Does it stipulate that the riders have to wear the casual clothes in certain settings? Could the riders sign a "press conference apparel" contract and a "track walk apparel" contract. Are Short and Seely irritated about the situation? I'm guessing they are.

this has been going on for decades, especially with Honda..............i'm sure there is some clause and or point in the riders contract regarding team issue parts, gear, apparel, etc. Ive been on the winning end of this and the losing end. Not an industry secret by any stretch.CoolCool

not 100% accurate. By 1988 or 89 I think both AXO and ANSWER had contracts with honda and riders to use "hondaline" apparel. Honda said this or no ride.........a couple guys didn't ride Hondas due to that

I don't disagree with that, but I would think its assumed with the territory when you sign with team Honda, you have to wear their lame fox pit shirts and jackets

Fly and TLD should take the high-road and try to out-bid FOX next time the deal comes up. It's called "conducting business" and temper tantrums are rarely forgiven.

Yeah, I imagine TLD and Fly are both less than giddy about their riders (even Short, who is an Ambassador) being seen with the Fox branding on their Official Honda sports gear.

Is the Fox logo also on their bikes rear fender sponsor-slab per Honda, JT?

For the past few years it's been TLD doing the team Honda gear and Ken Roczen's bike at Monster Cup had a TLD logo on the radiator shroud, which has now been replaced with a Fox head logo.

This was Kenny's look at MEC. Obviously he wasn't ecstatic about the deal either hence the "Roczen" stickers.

We would love the opportunity to bid. We would love to conduct business.

Sounds like a nightmare to work out the contracts for different riders.

When the Monster team sponsorship for Factory Kawasaki kicked in, 2007 I think it was? James was forced to drop his Red Bull sponsorship for that season and he was not happy about it. He would routinely cover up the logo on podiums with a towel.
