Bad idea to get back into riding/racing at the age of 37?

Been thinking about it a lot lately. I haven't entered a race since 2000 in which I got hurt (wasn't my fault, it was a mud race and lappers crashed into me) - was racking in 1rst places before I got hurt. I really miss riding and being in "MX shape" and the rush of being in a race and ripping around a MX track. But is it a bad idea to get back into it at my age? Not to mention, it's nearly impossible to find places to ride anymore - that would be the main show stopper right there. So many bike dealers in the area has went out of business too. I miss the good old days where riding places where plentiful, the bike shops thrived, and I was a great rider in great shape! But for some strange reason I've had the itch pretty bad lately! Maybe I'm getting tired of my other hobbies...and I definitely love the physical fitness aspect of MX riding.

It is a great idea. I started back up again at the age of 40 after a 15 year dry spell. I wish I had done it earlier. I say go for it.

I'm doing it at 41. Like you, I'm tired of everything I've tried doing since leaving moto. I got the bug again this last fall and decided I'm buying a bike this winter and getting back at it again next year.

Only you can answer that. The thing that made you quit the first time is still out there. If you miss the joy of it more than you fear the risk of it, nothing will stop you. Conversely, if someone can talk you out of it, you don't really want to do it. Age, in my mind anyway, has nothing to do with it.

Ride like you're 47 (not 27) and you'll be fine and have a hell of a good time!

Look at guys like Gary Jones and others that race and ride still,...simply ask yourself what YOU want to do. Btw, I'll be 47 next April Smile

I'm the same age as you and I quit riding in 99. I quit due settling down, I always kept an eye on the sport and went to watch the local National every year. Got back into riding after my marriage broke down. Dusted off the 94 CR250 and went riding. Not a great experience as I landed off the side of a jump on my 2nd lap and concussed myself. I try and ride every 2 weeks but its getting harder over here due to the bad weather. Plan to race a few meetings next year, I'm very lucky as my local track is 15 minutes away and it's a British Championship venue. Just restored the CR so that's part of the enjoyment too.

To answer your question; go for it!! Just remember you probably won't be as fast as you once was, but it's still fun.

I forgot to add, my brother quit at the same time as me & he's started riding again so I've got a riding buddy.

Like others have said, ride your age (not your mental age) and get out there! It will be as fun or funner than when you were younger.

It is expensive and dangerous. Those are the drawbacks.

The good parts:
Riding will be as fun as you remember, plus as you get back into it it's fun to see how quickly the rust comes off.
Gives you a great reason to workout and take care of yourself.
Gives you a great workout just by riding.
Gives you an excuse to hang out in your garage.
Vet class is a blast - most of us are just happy to still be out there!

Just remember, it's all for fun!

Just don't ride like you use to.

I just replaced my right shoulder from a crash at age 40 where I was riding like I was still 20.

Whether you think you can or think you cant, you're right!

Im 37 and riding the best I ever had, I don't hang it out as much but I just love being out on the bike. I had a few years off the bike also but once its in your blood its like theres always something missing when you don't get to ride.

Im not fused on racing, I do the club champs and that's about it, I just love riding for the sake of riding, im still hucking 100 foot doubles but just ride within your ability.

My 2 rules for riding at 37.......
If in doubt, leave it out (you don't need to prove anything to anyone)
And if you have had a good day, don't go out for that one last ride, put it on the trailer and call it a day

I'm definitely gonna have a hard time keeping myself in check and my wife will have a shitfit the first time I destroy myself.

Consider yourself fortunate. You are "getting back into it" at 37. Some of us did not start till 37....

When you're 47 like me, you'll look back and realize that 37 is not old.

I quit in 2003 been back for 1 1/2 At 31. Just take it easy for the first 6 months to a year. My biggest struggle was bikes. I went through 2 cr 250fs, yz 250, 2010 crf 450, a 02 cr 250, and now I'm back to riding cr 125s which is where I left off and just having a blast. I think I'm gonna give a fuel injected crf 250 a shot but keep my 125's as well. You will be more cautious the what you think.

I got back into riding at the age of 41 after a 16-year hiatus. I'm 51 now and just recently did my first race since 1988. Just enjoy it and don't put too much pressure on yourself. I just enjoy doing track days with my son and all our buddies (old and young).

I think it's a great idea to get back into it. It's the best sport in the world and I wish everyone could just try it once.....they would be addicted like most of us here.

I need to do , what I praise.....and that's " Ride within your means "......and I still catch myself doing ( or at least trying ) to do things I did 10-20yrs ago. It bites me in the ass every once in a while. Now days....I do it more for the exercise of it. Even though I would like to do some racing again this coming season. The way my brain is wired , I still need that adrenaline rush , slight bit of fear , close call type situations to keep me interested. If I ride just " safe ".....I tend to get a little bored after a while. Even though I know that's what I should be doing. ( Riding within my means )

Only you can answer the question if you feel like getting back into it. But my advice would be.....go for it!

At 52 I can tell you, you will not bounce like you did when you were 18.

Sounds like we're on the same level. What makes it fun for me is getting away with things that could've bit my ass. That's the rush and I look so forward to spring.

To borrow a line from Morgan Freeman, "I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head".

Makes no difference if your fault or not you still got hurt and that is the draw back is that you are not alone on the track and another riders problem can become your problem fast. I am going dual sport riding but Colorado has unlimited places to ride in the mountains so it may not be much of an option for you but just have fun what ever you decide.Cool
