its 5 years so 07 is the last year. But here's the trick, kx250's were made until 07 so he can just say its an 07.......

Lots of luck with that, have you heard of vin #'s and engine #'s?

I don't think you could pick a more power sapping track on the AMA circuit to try and qualify on. Best of luck.

It is sand..........two strokes are better in the sand......Period.

I would have thought that deep sand would magnify the HP difference between the two bikes.

Better than what exactly?? Better than a 450 four stroke? Not likely.

Good luck to him though, hope he has fun

This used to get mentioned every year back when both the two strokes and four strokes were racing. If I remember correctly the belief was that the lighter more nimble two strokes would float on top of the sand more, whereas the four strokes would dig in and plow though it more.

Just speaking from my own experience, the less powerful 2 stroke gets sucks in more and struggles to keep the power on the boil, where a 4 stroke will just get up and pull to the moon no matter where you are.

Iduno, tit for tat, but i think it magnifies the disadvantage of the power of the 2 stroke.

Renner fans might be a little dissapointed at Southwick, he's leaving the premix at home, and bringing a 450. A few years ago he finished top 10 on a clapped out Honda with a slipping clutch and pushing coolant out the radiator.

Whats the reason behind an older bike not being allowed on the track? After all, the same bike was raced in 05, 06, 07 etc..

7/16/2012 5:59 AM

its not that the two stroke is gonna float on top of the sand, the track is a frigging highway for first practice and hammered by second practice, the bulldozers (450s) fly on the smooth track i think southwick is the most obvious place that timed qualifing is bullshit

5 year rule on the bikes, i think the rule might keep old bikes out for safety reasons. I doubt a 5 yr old mx bike is safe at that level.imo

7/16/2012 9:25 AM

Well made a mistake, it is an 07. Just talked to him about the year limit.

I call bullshit sir. The OEM's control this sport and they only want their shiny NEW shit out there on TV. Can't afford for Honda to load up their toys and go home.

7/16/2012 10:47 AM

at dilla 2010 my buddiy raced a 05 rm 250 it has already been homogenized, or whatever they call it, anyway i told his dad it was to old, so he called the ama and they said the guys at the race dont have the paperwork for more than three years back, but it was ok to race it so i would just call to make sure after all its not about the racing, its about the MONEY, and im sure they want to take your money, and ill garentee no one at the ama gives a shit about you, sorry

And that would make the bike legal at 5 years.

The 2 stroke has the advatange when comparing cc vs cc, the 2 stroke is better in the sand, deep loam where the 4 stroke shines on slick hard pack dirt. I am afraid when comparing 250 2 stroke to 450 4 stroke the advantage falls in favour of the 4 stroke. It has the power to pull its extra weight.

7/16/2012 12:42 PM

Seems like the smoker would have a bit of an advantage when it comes to engine braking too. Although I know the newest crop of thumpers barely even have engine braking effects compared to the earlier 4-stroke MXers.

Well, pound for pound. I think a 250 smoker is at a disatvange anywhere now, but if you were going to try one in the sand would be a good place to try,......just saying.

2008, 09, 10, 11, 12 model..... that 5 year old RMZ450 of yours would be plenty safe at that level. Only a privateer would be riding it anyway. No way a factory star would ever even have to consider it.

I have always been of the opinion that under the displacement rules, bringing a 2 stroke out is just bringing a knife to a gunfight. There were a few years there that the 2 stroke and certain riders could still get the job done but those days are gone.
