Anyone sold their 450 and gone back to a 125?

I have a 16 KTM 450, and its a great bike but I just love riding 2-strokes. I ride them better, and just have more fun...

Found an 05 RM125 (with a 144 kit) for cheap ridden by a guy that rides in the woods. I am thinking about picking it up, and selling my 450 while it has extremely low hours (12).

I want to ride the bike before I make a decision, but I could sell the 450 and have a 125 with no bike payments.

Thoughts on the bike itself and the experience you have had given the situation would be appreciated.

Well I had a 450 and my son's 125 at the same time. The 125 while a blast to ride was not fun on fresh deep prep or when the track was deep and muddy. I'm like 195 so it was struggling on days like that. Long as the track was worn in and not deep it was fun. However take note that if you have buddy's with 450's that you like to jack around and race with that are around the same speed. You will suffer immensely lol. I'll just leave it at that. Prepare to leave your pride at the truck if you were used to riding with a certain group and they all ride 450's. It takes a lot more effort to go the same speed. But it is loads of fun. I personally think that like a 175 would be the perfect 2 stroke. Fun but with a little more grunt. 250 two strokes just give me arm pump because I don't get to ride enough to keep my arms in that kind of shape. No bike payments would be a big plus! More money for gear and beer! Cool

I appreciate your feedback. I only weigh 150lbs so the 125 carries me well. I raced a KTM 150 in the 250A class back in 2011 and did some work to those guys for a few laps and cant remember the last time I had that much fun.

Its just one of those things, I really think it would give me a new spark into wanting to ride more again.

I have both. I primarily ride the 450. Mainly cause I'm just faster on it and I'm to heavy for a 125 ( 225lb) but dam it's fun to shred on every once and a while.
Riding buddy sold his 2015 kx450 for a 2016 ktm 125sx. He loves it. He's pretty light like 155lb I believe. He said he just has more fun on it. And that ktm is a really good bike.

If you're going the 2 stroke route I'd stay with ktm and go with a 150sx. I've seen 2012 models on Craigslist for 3k.

I did.

It did give me new spark as well. Now instead of feeling stale having one 450 in the garage I have three smokers in all sizes and its fun again. I get giddy just trying to decide which bike to ride!

You know I'm a two stroke rider...

Sold my 465 recently and only because I have way more fun on the 125. Even with my size it's still more fun to ride.

Yes. Although I have had the privilege of riding plenty of other machines, as far as bikes I actually own I actually did exactly that: went from owning a KX450F to a YZ125 which is now a 144.

If I could I would also have a 250F in the garage because sometimes it's nice to not feel the need to push as hard as you can just to hit a simple jump. But I have owned and sold a few 125s over the years and every time I get rid of one I immediately regret it. 125s are an absolute blast to ride (even if you're not moving all that fast, it still sounds like you are!).

Unless you are a serious racer, I really do not think 450s are necessary. They are simply too much bike for the common rider. I would much rather ride something to its limit (or my perceived version of its limit) than constantly be metering my input on the bike so I don't over shoot a jump by 50 feet.

From a riding stand point, if you don't have muscle strength 450s will get you into trouble. If you don't have cardio strength 125s will get you nowhere.

I am doing exactly that. I'm 5' 7" and 155, and the 125s haul me around pretty well. I am faster on a 450, but not for long. I sold my 2015 YZ450 after getting busted up last fall. Then sold a YZ125, that was set up for woods.

I hated the width of the 450 at the shrouds, and the 125 vibrated horribly when revved hard (modded to 144 btw).

So, i'm all healed up, and have saved up some more time-off at work.

Now have to save a little more money, and it's 125 time.

Killer!

Not going to lie, Stank-Dog kinda motivated me towards doing this. I am already the slow A rider around town, so the 125 just gives me an excuse.

I think I would really like the KTM 150, just because I have already ridden them and already loved them.

The suspension is garbage and the power band is all over the place on the 150sx, been there done that, had a 2016 for all of a month, even after FC and tweaks, wasnt a great bike besides looks.

As far as a 125, I was all 250F for the last few years, picked up a yz125 for fun, fell in love and was faster on it, the 250F collected dust and eventually was sold. I'm about your weight too OP, 152lb, 5'11. Though I love my 125, there are times where the 250F would come in handy, alot of jumps/track sections that require some work that a 250F would be no trouble at all. Still love my 125 to death thou.

I like to have them all as you know Ryan.
We met because of a YZ 250 smoker you borrowed from me.

Way back when, I bought two Yamaha 250F's the first year they were available. Had so much fun, that I bought a CRF450 the first year it was available.

After breaking my back on the 450, I took about 8 years off.

I ride a CR125 now, and couldn't be happier. It just feels right.

Right on! Great find! Your thread inspired me to finally get out there and so the same. Just put a call in about a KX125 that has been sitting for a couple of years. Hope I can get it.

Ya at 150lbs you'll be just fine on a 144 I'd bet. plus your A level rider so you'll know how to make it sing anywayCool Post pics of the final build if you do get the Yamaha!

I have been riding 125s for the past 4 years. At 160 lbs (155 during the summer) and 5'9" I get around the track pretty well on the little bikes.

Last summer I decided it was time to move up a class and run a bigger bike. So in August I bought my first four stroke: a 2014 YZ450F. It was extremely fast, but I couldn't get used to the engine brake feeling on it.

It will take you some time to adjust to the smaller bike. It's a more active riding style and you'll have to learn to take a lot of outside lines at first to get over certain jumps. You will have to become a better rider; better at carrying speed through everything. If you don't, you'll get smoked.

I learned a ton racing my '08 and '11 YZ125s in the 30+, 25+ and 250B classes. I still prefer to race a 125, it's not even about lap times, but getting a good start. Hence I gave the 450F a try. I sold the 450 about 3 weeks ago.

You can beat the 450's on the little bike... You just have to get used to coming through from the back of the pack and carry speed:

Do it Ryan! I had a Eric Gorr 144 not long ago and it was a freakin' Blast... Felt like a Mountain Bike after coming off a 450. In fact, you may know Pete Sullivan?- He just got a 150sx, and I swear it's more fun to ride than anything. Who cares about how fast you're Actually going, it's how it make you feel.

If your 450 was a 350, I'd be interested. Smile

- Much better choice than the RM. Parts for the Honda are cheap! FYI, I bet Sullivan still has tons of engine parts from Dement's SRS 125- probably sell them to ya if interested.

Rio day track on a 125 is so much fun. Gp track is pretty good to except for the one real sandy corner. I want to get out to highlands and try it out soon.

I sold my CRF450 and bought a '16 KTM 150sx.
Best decision I've made in a long time. Couldn't be happier with my decision.
