I got a handful of 48t free rear sprockets and was wondering how this might feel vs my stock gearing now...

Thanks!

I loved the 48 rear paired to a stock 14 front.

It depends on your weight and track types - but on more open or loamy/soft terrain tracks the 48 really seemed to spread the power out for me - where stock I felt the bike was mostly off bottom and mid - then signed off a tad early.

The other good bolt on for the "issue" for me was a pc pipe...but to each their own as not everyone likes the loss in bottom.

I run a 13/49 on my RM's which is pretty close to the same motor package of the YZ's. I have heard of quite a few guys running 14/51 and 52's. I haven't tried that type of gearing but some guys swear it works better. Not sure exactly why.

the YZ's power is already super smooth for me so I just don't want to lose useable power I guess...I weigh 165 with gear on and ride mainly a a fairly open track as well as some fun singletrack stuff! I'll give the 13/48 a shot ha

14/50 stock.

13/48 is basically 14/52. If you're fast you would probably be 3rd and up on the MX track.

I read in a magazine in the 90s that Honda liked to use the 14 tooth front sprocket because it changed the torque load, when matched with a bigger rear sprocket. I tried it a long time ago with 14 and 52/53 gearing and it seemed to increase torque and traction on my CR250. I've been running it ever sense, even with my 450. It has the added benefit of the chain and front sprocket lasting longer.

Last year I had a 13/50 combo on my 07 and that thing was so snappy off the bottom all my buddies had a hard time controlling the ol girl. This year I switched to 14/50 and I like it a ton better a lot smoother compared to the torque monster of last year. I have no clue was a 13/48 would feel like.

I run 13/49 on my 2015. She runs awesome. I had a 13/50 on it but felt too snappy.

Hmm?...i may have to give this 14/50 or 51 a try. Over on TT I saw quite a few guys talking about it.

I ran 15/45 for desert riding on my 06 YZ250 2-stroke to try to keep up with the 450 4-strokes and it still was smokin' fast for MX. It still had no problem lifting the front wheel in any gear. I don't think you'll have any problem either. I am 175 lbs without gear.

I run a 14/ 49. We ride sand and deeper loam almost always, and I am over 200lbs. Pulls forever but also helps Derek Harris's porting make it happen.

I ran 14/50 on my YZ125! I thought stock gearing was the same as the 250. It isn't lol, I never got it out of 4th gear with that combo, on a six speed!

How was it in the tight stuff? Thinking of ditching my KX500 for desert racing

I thought it was great. I also ran a Rekluse Core EXP 1.0 at the time and the combo was remarkable. A lot of people would roll their eyes at that gearing, but I could keep up fine with everyone and it also helped calm the chassis since I wasn't revved out all the time. It essentially made the gears longer.

I ran a 14/52 (basically a 13/48) on my 2008 YZ250. I liked it, had a tad less top end than I would have liked but I could literally take some turns in 4th gear. One thing about that gearing I felt like it loaded the rear shock up pretty quickly but I could ride an entire track in 3rd gear most of the time.

I run a 15/48 on my 2013 YZ250. I primarily race offroad and grand prix. I do hit the tracks and I usually go back to the stock 14/50 for tracks, but when Im super lazy and run 15/48 on the tracks the bike does fine. Its actually almost a cheater gearing because you can leave it in second and not shift as much.

For me 14/50 feels super snappy and short geared. 15/48 has no problem getting the front end up either.
