They do, with a new airbox. Except for the fork guards.

The 03 bike is a better bike imo.yamaha made the frame and swingarm slightly less rigid for 03.they made some other change's too.also that is an 03 model in your picture, you can tell by the rear brake master cylinder resovoir being the compact one piece unit.
Heres an 02 with the visible different rear brake resovoir if you look closely.

$1800 might be alittle steep. I would wait until mid-October to November for a bike. The prices seem to be more reasonable when everyone gets back on the bikes after the Red Sticker season.
Do you ride during the Red Sticker season? I thought about buying an 02' until I realized that Hollister Hills is pretty brutal during the summer and I only tend to ride there during the winter wetness (I'm a Hollister local)
All I can say, make sure you look for a clean bike. Buying one to "fix" up tends to be more off a checkbook nightmare.

It's a backward ass regulation here in CA. You would think it would target the older machines (70's & 80's) but due to the hard work to find and classify all those relics, they decided to target new production models.
Any 2003 and newer competition model (one's without smog regulation emission equipment) are regulated to a "Red" registration sticker thru the CA DMV. Red sticker motorcycles are not permitted to ride at California State Off-Road Parks, usually from April-May until October.

All dirt bikes have to be registered in California or just ones you want to ride on public land?

Can't you just punch an 02 (or older) frame number into a newer frame to get around it? Just means there would be two (or more) bikes with the same number? Grinning

I'll be cool with being one of the few too, I just want a bike that handles great and fits me. If I beat guys with 2016 bikes with it, then that's just an added bonus Laughing

The 2002 YZ250 is the holy grail of YZ's in NorCal for green sticker riding. But the OP knows that already and that is why he is looking for that year specifically. They are there, but you will have to spend some time looking. You may have better luck when red sticker season opens. I spent a couple months looking for the right one for me. Bikefinds.com and Searchtempest make looking for them on multiple city craigslist sites easier.

For those not in the bayarea or NorCal, prices are significantly higher here for the 02 than elsewhere. $1500-2K for not so fresh ones and up to $3k + for ones fresh and modded for offroad racing. Other than the sea of orange at D36 offroad races, the YZ is next most popular bike in my experience (very distant 2nd). The 02 can share or be retrofitted with anything from the latest YZ... and is green sticker. Hence its value.

I spent $1700 for mine a couple years back and immediately stripped it down and split the cases before rebuilding it into my offroad bike. Friends not in NorCal thought it was crazy, but thats just the market for this years YZ. Yeh, I would like an 06+ one and can easilly find one for what I have into my 02.... but as the OP knows... it limits your riding opportunities during the summer green sticker season in the Bay Area.

Good luck on your search!

I went with an 03 due to the parts like the crank being the same like the new bikes. Dont want problems in the future replacing cranks.

You can use the 03 newer crank on the older motors, just need to use the 03 flywheel too.
