Over the past six month's I've been waking up during the night with "dead hands", all numb and tingling, having to shake them off to get feeling back. Hands also go numb when driving and sometimes painting. Went to see a hand consultant at hospital who has booked me in for more nerve conductivity tests with a view to possibly having Carpal Tunnel surgery to reduce pressure on nerve's supplying hands.

Has anyone else had Carpal tunnel surgery and did it work? Any issues, weak wrists after etc?

Would Adderall help?Wink ....................only joking but interested to hear anyone else's experience with surgery?

There's also a school of thought about deep massage to relieve the imbalance in muscles in forearm as an alternative.

Haven't had the surgery myself but know a couple people who have recently. One still complains of pains every so often though not as bad as it was and the other says his hands feel normal again. They had both hands done, the female still complains though (typical) lol

I had it done on both hands. I can ride for hours now without numbness. Wish I had it done years ago. Takes about a year to get full strength back. Don't do them at same time though!

I had both hands done two weeks apart. Mine were so bad they were numb all the time. I had about 60% feeling back right away. Another 30% in the next 2 weeks. The last 10% took a few months. The palms are alittle tender for awhile. I don't notice anything now. They don't go numb at all anymore

My wife had a bad case of it that required surgery a couple years ago.

She spends a lot of time typing and her right hand had gotten so bad she was in tears almost every day and couldn't sleep due to the pain.

Nothing gave relief - anti-inflammatories, ice/heat, etc. She found the pain was tolerable if she could stop using her hand for several days but that wasn't realistic. Tried everything to avoid surgery (braces, supports, etc., even got her Dragon Dictation) but the damage was already done.

She didn't get immediate relief from the surgery - there's the time required for healing of the surgical site that isn't pleasant plus there's limited mobility for a while - but within a year she was good as new and hasn't had pain since.

Don, Wow, those are high incisions! Mine were about 3/8" in length.

Yes, on both hands. The relief was immediate (the incisions still have to heal) and now 12 years later still no numbness/pain. I was riding mountain bikes 4 weeks after surgery. Like others have said, I should have done it earlier. I waited a lot of years just putting up with the symptoms.

I had both mine done at the same time back in the late 90's and had no trouble with either since. My doc warned me against doing both at once, but I figured I knew better and I could handle it. I handled it, but it's hard, mostly psychologically and it's hard on those around you, because you're basically helpless. I wouldn't do both at once.

Now here I am typing this with my right hand in a cast and my left in a splint from broken right metacarpal and broken left wrist...plus two ribs. Crashed my XR650R at 0 mph when i forgot I had a disc brake lock on my front wheel and took off. Fucking sucks!

I had it done about 8 years ago. piece of cake, lasts a long time. I delivered mail the next day. Mine was done arthro scopically. They make a tiny incision in your wrist about 3 8th's of an inch and go in there with tiny cameras and surgical tools and fix it. I cant even find the tiny scar anymore. They do make you sign a statement that if they have to open you more that you give them permission to. Good friend off mine had it down on both his wrists this spring, about 3 weeks apart. He never missed a day of work other than the days he had it done. I told him to go to the hand specialist I went and he did. Just be sure to get a good hand specialist. It's important, and spend some time finding one. But it's easy, and when you walk out from the surgery, it doesn't even hurt. As with other things the sooner you take care of it, the easier it is. Good luck with it.

Did you notice a difference when you were riding after having it done?

Rob, I just had carpal tunnel release surgery on both my left and right hands done. I'm just 5 weeks out on my left hand and 9 weeks out on my right. I will start riding next week and will be able to give more of an update, but what's bothering me is my hands are still going numb when I sleep. Doctor says (for me) I may have other issues causing that, so not sure what to think yet. I didn't get the type you see in the pics above. My scar is just a 1/2 inch scar on my wrist. Looks like I made a feeble attempt at suicide once.

Had LH done, getting RH done in fall. Couldn't even feel clutch lever. Now RH is getting the same way and having trouble with throttle and brake. Its easy surgery. The test you are having done will tell the tale, as if it is just your pinky, ring and middle, it is different then thumb and index. Can't remember which was which. Important thing is that you catch it in time, if you let it go too long, you will not gain 100% strength back in your hand my doc said, so don't wait. Its easy and painless. I was racing again in 4 weeks.

A Chiropractor can help as well depending on the root cause.
