Anymore substantiated issues w/ 17' CRF Starter?

Hey - I know there's been some rumblings around an issue with the 17' CRF450s and their kickstarter causing the case to crack or something like that?

Can anyone shed more light as to how much of an issue this is for ALL the 17's or just a batch or is there a recall?

Any info would be great since the E-start affordable option of only $1,600 (all said and done) is not ideal haha

Thanks!

My understanding is those kickstart issues were on pre-prod bikes, certainly I havent seen/heard it happen at all with any customer bikes....happy to be proven wrong.

I know these bikes like a light slow kick to fire them up when hot (which might be hard to do in the heat of the moment after a crash), so if you do that you should have no issues anyway.

I got the RX so no issues for me anyway Smile

My buddy at the dealership right now ha - what does it add up to when you break it down?

$109 http://shop.powersports.honda.com/p/electric-start-wire-harness?pp=24

$529 http://shop.powersports.honda.com/p/electric-start-kit?pp=24

So while I await his reply as to why he said $1600 I assume there's more to the install requirements then what I've linked above?

Battery? idk haha

I'm guessing it must be with their labor charge. Shelby, don't be a pussy, put it in yourself... Only takes like three hours LaughingLaughingLaughingTongue

So I looked st the instructions on the install of the estart. Not as simple as it should be. Do you know you have to pull the cam out to replace the decompression plunger in this kit? So I see some labor costs that the customer won't like.

Looks like the wire harness need to be replaced as well. Why Honda didn't use the estart harness from the beginning I don't understand. I'm not thrilled with Honda on this. I'm not putting one on my bike. Screw that.

Btw ML, the battery doesn't come with the kit. So his 1600 qoute probably isn't that far off. Gotta pull the transmission cover on the side of the case to do the gears for the estart. Combine that with the cam work, wire harness swap, and other parts of the kit I see it being an 6+ hour flat rate job.

My buddy sent me this he got from someone else. Said it was something about giving the bike gas when starting causing it to backfire. Not sure if that's what caused it just what I was told.

Ruu row. Wonder if Honda is going to offer the same sort of warranty back up as KTM? Same old same old. Taking your chances buying the first model of a new gen

It was a ECU map issue (on one of three maps)on preproduction bikes that could cause backfire when starting hot and full gas with kickstarter (the cycle had to be exactly wrong position). The map is was changed to all bikes, so no worries.

About electric start, as ML said do it yourself. Here is the video we made about it.

Do you know how easy it is to change a cam? I would never let anyone touch my new Honda after I wheeled it out the door!

So I'm assuming it's not an ECU issue? Or is it an ECU issue that results in this? How do I ensure it doesn't happen to mine haha

Michael,is this a known issue or only related to pre-production? Only asking as I rolled a freshy into the shop today. My (my son's) bike starts with a nice easy slow 4-stroke kick. The fit and finish of this bike is amazing. Is there a recall in your opinion in the works? Hope it's an isolated incident. And has been rectified. Thanks.

It is a mapping thing, to prevent the backfire happening they changed the timing advance later on the maps when you give full throttle when starting. At least every bike sold in Finland had the new mapping put on before they were given to customers.

I know. I keep staring at it. I think I'm freaking it out.
First ride is at Sunrise MX on Saturday. My boy will break it in. I'll spin a few laps to address any suspension issues. As it sits in the shop, quality is spot on. Haven't found any discrepancies. Time will tell...to be continued I guess.

Side note: hope it doesn't influence me to grab another '17 for myself. Uugghh..

Yeah, I do. I am a former ASE certified master tech for 16 years. Now I am the service manager for a Powereports dealer. I do all my own work still. I just don't feel like doing all that just for estart. Not worth it to me.

If it's a mapping concern is there a way to see which map I have and if it is the affected map or not? Any map versions available for us to compare to? Thanks!

Why not just buy an RX? Seems like it's the better way to go if you really want e-start. Not much there to convert it to full MX configuration.

That is a very sweet "Freshy". Those new Honda's look fast just sitting still. I think my garage wants one, maybe I will pick one up tomorrow.

Well, I was allowing about $300 for labor...

But, the closest I get to installing one is when I hit the button on the RX.
