So I'm fixing up a 97 RM250 to flip. I plan to do a full graphics kit but the sticker choices are very limited on the 97 shrouds. I've found a handful more kits on the 99-00 shrouds that will work on the entire rest of the bike. From what I see, the tank was the same from the 97 model to the 99, they just changed the shrouds. If I ordered the 99 sticker kit, would I be able to trim it down to fit an cover the 97 shroud? The 97 appears to have smaller shrouds, but I wasn't sure if the very front corner would be covered. I don't know if anyone has both years or even just the shrouds to look at it person. Worst case, I can just order the 99 plastics, but I'm trying to keep cost down. An just because of sentimental purposes I usually end up decking these old smokers out and losin my ass.
Your idea to trim down the '99 kit would work, but be advised that the fuel tanks are different. I'm not sure what the difference is, but there is a new part number from '98 to '99. The good news is that the parts interchange, which suggests you could use either one with the same results; thus, the shapes must be the same. (And the graphics would likely sit on them in the same manner.)
Also, the lower pointy edge of your '98 shrouds protrudes further forward than the '99 shrouds so you'll miss some coverage there.
Suzuki changes part numbers anytime an item will fit on a larger selection of models; my guess is that the '99 was different enough to be referred to as a "minor change" model and thus they updated all the part numbers.
