Looks like we'll get to see the electric dirt bike in action at this month's Red Bull Straight Rhythm.

That's badass. My half-hazard guess is that the Alta will do well in events like this. It should be quick off the start and getting the power back down quickly after the walls should be easy for this bike. I'm excited to see it.

No mention of the rider?

Awesome!!! It's getting close! The riding opportunities that will open up with the advent of the electric bike is going to hopefully make in town backyard tracks a feasible reality. Whats the price on that make?

Josh Hill has been riding the Alta on the straight rythem course at Pala this week. Probably safe to say Josh will be the one riding it

Don't mean to be pessimistic but is this thing really going to do anything against four strokes? On pro level SX obstacles? Josh looked good on it but damn, SX already? Definitely will be interesting to see.

The Red Bull PR:

Red Bull Straight Rhythm, an evolution of the sport of supercross, unveils the first half of the 2016 rider field who will race on the 1Ž2-mile long, “unwound” track on Saturday, October 22 at Fairplex in Pomona. This year’s event will look – and sound – a bit different, as an electric motorcycle from Alta Motors will line up to race against the gas powered machines.

This year the unique event will feature a unique entry, as Josh Hill will try his hand on an Alta Motors Redshift MX in the Lites Class, becoming the first rider ever to race an electric motorcycle in a national-level motocross event. This year’s Open Class field features Lucas Oil Pro Motocross and AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey as well as newly minted Red Bull KTM rider Trey Canard, who will take to the 1Ž2 mile rhythm section track for the first time. Additional Open Class riders include Marvin Musquin, Austin Politelli, Vince Friese, Josh Hansen, Mike Alessi and Jeff Alessi. In addition to Hill, announced riders in the Lites Class include Shane McElrath, Jordon Smith and Mitchell Oldenburg. The remaining 12 riders will be announced shortly.

Just as a hypothetical, do you guys believe if someone like josh hill could qualify for a national on a modded Alta? And is it true that pro circuit redid Josh's motor on the bike in all those videos?

I didn't know Pro Circuit deals with electric motors. I got a cordless impact that needs a rebuild, I'll have to give them a call.

Yeah that's why I asked, didn't sound right I just thought I heard that somewhere I was probably wrong.

2016 250f average numbers (stock):
HP: 40.77
Torque: 19.97
Weight: 223.5 lbs

Alta numbers:
HP: 40
Torque: 36
Weight: 251 lbs

Tough to say on a course like this. Though I feel like he'll have a disadvantage against the factory bikes. If it were stock bikes it'd be a pretty close race I think!

I'd guess they could tweak the motor some and they might have some weight reduction options? Unobtanium bolts and the like.

I would love to get an Alta. I could ride right in my backyard without anyone complaining.

Do they have a Holeshot Award? If they do, I'll guess the Alta will win it.

Thanks for posting those numbers...for some reason I would have thought the e-bike would have been lighter than that.

You really cant mod an electric motor. Electric motors already average about 98 percent efficiency at creating power compared to an ICE which averages at about 25 percent efficiency, probably lower for a race engine. The only real avenues for performance improvement of an electric motor is the cooling to run a higher continuous output, different winding's optimized for the number of motor poles and the voltage you want to run, and using rare earth metals for better magnet densities.

All the power increases for electrics will come through battery improvements.

Man...if they could get the e-bikes on par with the ICE bikes (performance, reliability, RANGE-especially range, and price) I'd own one in a heartbeat...perfect for the trails in national forests and BLM land (the greenie "kumbaya tree worshippers" won't be able to complain about the noise any more) ! And if you take away the noise, neighbors won't have anything to complain about in terms of moto tracks (as long as the track owners keep the dust down).

If they can get up to par, e-bikes could literally save moto in urban America...but I'm not sure it will ever happen though...its going to take the jap manufacturers to get on board, and I'm not sure they ever will...I hope they do...but I'm not sure if they will.

This is the next generation of dirtbikes. Look at the beginning of the fourstrokes , people were sceptical just like now. Look what happened over the past years. And the electric dirtbikes wil be just better and better in the next few years and on the same level as the current factory bikes. It's just a matter of time Wink

Its gonna be just like 97. The ugly duckling will win and the champ will relinquish the crown.

Might save a few riding places but it won't be fun to ride. Four strokes make everything so easy think of something with more torque and no gears. Doesn't sound like fun at all. Yeah, i'm a small bore 2 stroke guy. The fatasses will love it just like their 450's. Put her in 3rd and just twist the right grip.

And its impossible to get the same experience in one of those horseless carriages, that you can from a horse and buggy. Am I right?

Nobody will make you own one...You can keep riding your horse-er, 125 two stroke-if you want...more power to you.

Crazy to think we will all be riding electric in the not so distant future.
