Who are some riders that have went to the big bike class, with a ton of hype that never really panned out to that. I don't mean a Weimer who won a 250 title and moved up, but more of a "can't miss rider"?

From where I sit, Travis has 100% lived up to his potential.

The guy is one of the best ever to throw a leg over a bike and happens also to be crazy good racer.

I would lean more Barcia than Canard. Canard has shown if he can stay healthy, is can win. Good calls though

Me. But I'm only 53 so there's still a chance.

Particularly if you saw Damon Huffman in '96 nearly still a win from McGrath in Seattle. At that point, I was convinced he was the next big thing.

Good answers. Huffman was the one that immediately came to mind. Pastrana may have gone on to do amazing things, but I still get sad when I think about his racing career. Some people may consider what he has done outside of racing as better than what we expected from him in racing. I disagree, because racing means more to me than that other garbage. It's cool, but it's not SX and MX. His racing career was even more of a let down than Stewart's IMO. Not saying that being 2nd all time on the SX wins list is a "let down", but everybody expected more than what was accomplished with both guys.

He didn't accomplish what he should have, but he still did more than 99.999999999999999999% ever will and is one of the most bad ass mf'ers to ever ride these dirt bikes we all love. There were far bigger failures than James Stewart.

Thread doesn't say failure it says potential. James is certainly no failure.

Going back a ways, but on big bikes, Damon Bradshaw, dude should have cleaned up.
Micky Damond, damn Motley Crue.
Ezra Lusk, Shaun Kalos,
I'll think of more later.

I didn't mean "failure" literally. I just think there are other guys who had a much larger gap from reaching their full potential. Stewart made it to the top in amazing fashion. Didn't stay there as long as he should have, obviously.

IT9 - Not that he had a bad 450 career by any means though.

Mike Alessi. Thought he was going to win championship after championship, but never did.

You could add Davi and Josh Grant to that. Both of them looked really good coming off of 250s and Josh even won his first 450 SX.

there is lots of guys out there that are 250 champions and never won a 450 race. they all basically fall into that category. musquin has 4 250 titles but never won a 450 race, wilson, bagget, weimer, tickle...list goes on. having said that, that doesn't mean they don't work hard.

Travis Pastrana really? He's lived fully passed his potential. I bet his net worth is more than any mx/sx rider. He has championships some guys never get that at all.

Yeah, he's accomplished all that, without ever winning a 450 main. That's called not meeting his potential.

When I watched Baggett in 2011-12, I was convinced he was the second coming of the GOAT.

James Reed. One or two sx races and he was done. I wonder if Ralph knows what happened to him.

I guess I wouldn't say he didn't live up to his potential, because certainly his resume says otherwise, but JMB would have had a whole shitload of titles to his name if he had wanted them.
