I've owned four strokes but am currently riding an RM250. I rode my friends YZ450 the other day right after jumping off of my RM and it is truly amazing how much easier it is to go fast on the 450. I personally have more fun on the RM though. I still waffle back and forth between 2 and 4 for the next bike..... maybe I will follow your path and keep the RM and go buy a new 450 to park next to it.

Harder to ride, short rpm curve, wheel spin, etc... There are pros and cons with everything. Take the blinders off and try to open your mind...

Oh man how could anybody ride such a thing. How would you have ever survived 10 years ago when it was 2 strokes only? *GASP* You mean I have to have a little more skill to ride one? Fuck that shit.

A chunk of aluminum? If he's lucky a couple of strokes fell out.

It gave up on the face of an 80ft double....first thought that entered my mind in the air was "uh oh, this is gonna hurt."

Hah! You called yourself 'lazy' in a race-motor topic! What a tool. Yes, I brought up the kdx200, it has won many 'races'. Sure it was in the woods, under Jeff Fredette, but you must be too young to remember the legends. It is very easy to ride, and very fast, and light, and so on. Unlike those fat, expensive for no reason pigs. 'Even though I like them, they are just not the superior race motor, thats all.'
You CAN get away with a 'big' 4t for awhile not spending much for repairs, same as a 2t, but when it finally does go, might as well just dump the 4t and get a new one. Oh, and make it a 2t, it's a better motor for a motorcycle.
If anything, at least they don't sound like a gnarly fart. If you look at both sides of the coin, next time at a track, the new 4t are really sweet, but they sound like shit, where the 'new'(not really) 2t's are just really sweet. If they did make actual new 2t's, I think most 'racers' would go back. Oh, and lazy people like you too.

Your opinion of me or anything else means less than the weak ass fart I just let go. You are still missing the point but I didn't expect much from an intellectual midget and you delivered. I can do the name calling thing too if you want to go there. Still LMAO at you bringing in the KDX200 motor for racing MX. Did I hurt your feelings cuz maybe that is the bike you ride on the trails? We are talking MX, skycrane. Do you even ride MX? Maybe you could step up and jump on the big powerful KDX 220.Laughing

Check E-Bay. Just got both halves for a KX250 for $75.

What year is it?

Ouch! none on e-bay right now, but Bike Bandit lists $956.53 for an '08/'07 case. Don't seem to have them for earlier than '07. No info for an '09.

Wow. I knew KTM parts were higher, but that's double what I would expect to pay even for new.

'08 250 SX-F. The connecting rod failed and the big end did the damage. I have heard about a recall on the rod for that year. I am searching for it now.
The bike has less then 20hrs on it and I am meticulous on maintenance.
I will be scouring e-bay for cases. Anyone have experience with Hot Rods conn rods?

Watch KTMTalk and pick up a motor someone is parting out. Used bikes not selling good many part outs there. Happy to hear you didn't have serious body damage.

20 hours shouldn't have failed (of course). I'd definitely check recalls.

Hot Rods makes good cranks and rods, as does Wiseco. Have used both on two strokes, never had an issue. Talked to the Wiseco rep about 6 months ago, and they said they have a new supplier with their crank kits because they were unhappy with the production quality of their old suppliers for 4 stroke cranks. So, I'm assuming they'll be good.

If you're going that route, I'd buy a complete crank kit I think. I've priced rod and bearings separately, and it's damn near the same price as buying the whole thing (at least for 2 strokes, don't know about 4). Plus, they come pre-balanced. Last kit I got off of e-bay (from a store called ATV unlimited, Wiseco kit), was for a '01 KX 250. The entire kit was $180. Came with crank, bearings, seals, and bottom end gaskets.

Yeah, and KTMTalk sounds like a good source (I've heard Katoom riders talk about it a bunch). Thumpertalk might also provide some leads.

Well, good luck. And glad you're alright as well.

Just checked, no Wiseco kit for your bike, and Hot Rods just sells the rod for about $140.

Dang, gonna get expensive quickly.

4 strokes have tainted the sport in my opinion. Look at the 2005 supercross series compared to now. A lot of people were riding their bikes to the limit, and it showed, it was much more exciting to watch.

Nowdays, if you ride a 450 with the same level of aggression, you end up putting yourself out for the rest of the season.

4-strokes are boring to watch for the most part, because few riders can ride them to their limit. Even James doesn't ride his to the limit 100% of the time. For example, James' pass on Davi Millsaps at Freestone in Texas last year. He was riding the bike to its potential during that pass, but he's obviously smart enough to know you can't do that even 30% of the time without serious injury.

Just did the math well because I am bored at home instead of going to the races...

To completely rebuild a yz250 (new cylinder, crank, head, piston all gaskets) 1200.05

To completely rebuild a yz250f (new head,cylinder, camshafts,all valves, springs, cam chain..EVERYTHING) $1922

That is total destruction minus the cases themselves. So $700 once a year is ruining the sport and making the OEM'S rich? Keep in mind that the two stroke rider is replacing clutches, top ends, reeds, and spending about $2.00 extra for each gallon of gas. Technically speaking if you were to burn 4 gallons of gas a week that's $32 bucks a month or $384, Add two top ends a year and 1-2 more clutches than a four stroke uses they are about even

If you keep up with maintenance, valve adjustments, replace the cam chain and tensioner the four stroke might actually be cheaper....

I understand that most people don't rebuild their own four strokes and that is a place where extreme costs come into play. However, if you can rebuild a two-stroke you can rebuild a four stroke.

I know this is completely stupid of me posting facts...and I apologize before hand.

You sound like someone who actually rides. Imagine that. Maybe some of these whiners should try it every once in a while.
