Good post. Keep the faith guys. If you dont remember your history it will be forgotten.
You CAN get away with a 'big' 4t for awhile not spending much for repairs, same as a 2t, but when it finally does go, might as well just dump the 4t and get a new one. Oh, and make it a 2t, it's a better motor for a motorcycle.
If anything, at least they don't sound like a gnarly fart. If you look at both sides of the coin, next time at a track, the new 4t are really sweet, but they sound like shit, where the 'new'(not really) 2t's are just really sweet. If they did make actual new 2t's, I think most 'racers' would go back. Oh, and lazy people like you too.
What year is it?
JB Weld fixes everything!
Wow. I knew KTM parts were higher, but that's double what I would expect to pay even for new.
Pit Row
The bike has less then 20hrs on it and I am meticulous on maintenance.
I will be scouring e-bay for cases. Anyone have experience with Hot Rods conn rods?
Hot Rods makes good cranks and rods, as does Wiseco. Have used both on two strokes, never had an issue. Talked to the Wiseco rep about 6 months ago, and they said they have a new supplier with their crank kits because they were unhappy with the production quality of their old suppliers for 4 stroke cranks. So, I'm assuming they'll be good.
If you're going that route, I'd buy a complete crank kit I think. I've priced rod and bearings separately, and it's damn near the same price as buying the whole thing (at least for 2 strokes, don't know about 4). Plus, they come pre-balanced. Last kit I got off of e-bay (from a store called ATV unlimited, Wiseco kit), was for a '01 KX 250. The entire kit was $180. Came with crank, bearings, seals, and bottom end gaskets.
Yeah, and KTMTalk sounds like a good source (I've heard Katoom riders talk about it a bunch). Thumpertalk might also provide some leads.
Well, good luck. And glad you're alright as well.
Dang, gonna get expensive quickly.
Nowdays, if you ride a 450 with the same level of aggression, you end up putting yourself out for the rest of the season.
4-strokes are boring to watch for the most part, because few riders can ride them to their limit. Even James doesn't ride his to the limit 100% of the time. For example, James' pass on Davi Millsaps at Freestone in Texas last year. He was riding the bike to its potential during that pass, but he's obviously smart enough to know you can't do that even 30% of the time without serious injury.
To completely rebuild a yz250 (new cylinder, crank, head, piston all gaskets) 1200.05
To completely rebuild a yz250f (new head,cylinder, camshafts,all valves, springs, cam chain..EVERYTHING) $1922
That is total destruction minus the cases themselves. So $700 once a year is ruining the sport and making the OEM'S rich? Keep in mind that the two stroke rider is replacing clutches, top ends, reeds, and spending about $2.00 extra for each gallon of gas. Technically speaking if you were to burn 4 gallons of gas a week that's $32 bucks a month or $384, Add two top ends a year and 1-2 more clutches than a four stroke uses they are about even
If you keep up with maintenance, valve adjustments, replace the cam chain and tensioner the four stroke might actually be cheaper....
I understand that most people don't rebuild their own four strokes and that is a place where extreme costs come into play. However, if you can rebuild a two-stroke you can rebuild a four stroke.
I know this is completely stupid of me posting facts...and I apologize before hand.
