Question for the old school dads out there that like to restore bikes...
I am in the throws of restoring my '03, nothing fancy, mostly stock budget build.

And I came across this on CL yesterday.

$500 takes it all, including the stands. The '02 has potential but the '01 and '97 need a lot of parts and attention. It took me 6 months to get my bike where it is now due to fatherhood and the career.
Obviously this is a steal of a deal but when looking at the big picture of properly restoring these machines and not being a full-time mechanic, is the cost and effort worth it? The wife is cool with it but I am just afraid my garage will be a junk yard for a couple years. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!

You can try to make one clean,
Take all the junk parts to make a replica, just for fun
Sell anything you will not use for 500.
Just the stands and the couple pipes you will spend 1 hour on and you will get 200 ...

Look for "complete" bikes for a restoration. They can be steaming piles of blown up mess, but "complete" or close to that is the key. Even basket cases are a crap shoot when you can't find studs, dowels, air boots, etc...

If the 02 includes a good cylinder and the play in the connecting rod is OK, I'd buy it.
You can sell the extra forks for $100 bucks or more, and the rest of the extra parts, then use the money to finish the 02.
But, the guy says it needs $700 to get running. Ask him what it needs. If it needs bottom end work, I could be way off.
If it was in my area, that's what I would do.
BTW: It was kind of fun restoring the bikes. Only one is running so far.
what about transferring the wheels and the forks from the 02 the the 01, i love my 03 forks. maybe focus on the 01? ebay a motor? hell they all may have trashed motors.. i have no idea what this dude is bringing
Oh lawd, what have I done?
Hopefully I can have these out of here by Christmas..
The '02 250 came with a title. Seized up motor and needs a carb.
'01 250 is a super clean chassis, needs wheels, handlebars, motor, carb, seat and electrical
'98 125 needs wheels and a motor, forgot how light that bike was.
I would start with the bike hat needs the least and then go from there.
If you are interested in chassis parts let me know.
Post a reply to: 3 junk Hondas. Is it worth it really?
