250 two stroke for 16 year old??

Hey guys, this is my first ever post on vital mx. I'm gonna be buying a new bike (to me) in the next week or so. I've ridden and raced an 07 crf250r and currently race a 2012 yz125. I'm gonna be turning 16 soon and I am torn between two bikes in my area. One is a 2014 kx250f that is owned by a former Canadian national pro and comes with some nice PC parts. The other is a 2014 cr250r that has all the mods I could dream of. I'm gonna continue to race mx at the c/b class level. I definitely want more power than my 125, but I'm worried about 4 stroke issues that I've had in the past. My friend went from a yz144 to a yz250 and he loves it but he's 19. I'm around 5'10 and weigh 185 lbs. thanks for the help. Btw both bikes are at a good price, the kx is about 500 more.

the '14 kx250f is either going to be awesome or terrible (cost wise). Is this pro rider a guy that tried to make it through the whole season with just one bike, or a guy who could afford to have a complete spare bike and a complete spare motor? If he was trying to stretch funds, that 250f would be far too risky for me.

I'm 5'10" and 170lbs, and absolutely love my yz250, but I also ride and race primarily sand tracks.

185 is towards the heavy side for a small 4-stroke. But, its easier to ride for a novice or so. Being a pros bike not good though, you not up to par with his mods. Plus, there's no such thing as a '14 cr250r.

Take the 250 2 stroke unless you are a rich kid. I was about the same size as you at 15 and bought a nice used cr500 2 stroke with my lawn mowing money. Bought a new rm250 the next year and loved it. The 500 was too much for me at that age but the 250 was so much fun to ride.

I would never recommend a used 4 stroke to a kid with a tight budget. I rode a lot at your age and the rebuild costs of 4 strokes would have ruined the sport for me at that age. But mom and dad didn't fund my riding at all.

If you have a 250 smoker that feels good under you, you can have more fun and go faster at most tracks then a 250f. The two stroke will help you learn to carry more and more speed around corners which will help on any bike down the road.

The question is, can you afford to rebuild a 250F in the event that it blows up on you? (even if the internals are stock)

This is my 15 yr old, 6 ft 2 in, 160 lb son. I bought him a 250F and he hated it, will only ride a 250 2 stroke now. Said he absolutely hated the weight of the F, said it felt like a pig.

Try them a few laps with a stop watch, the 2 stroke should be faster, or just try your friend's 250 stroke, based on your level you will love it unless its setting are weird.
Based on your budget you may find very nice bikes, fully mod, which is coool too !
I got full vitard on a KX500 from 16, occasionally, but also tried the 250 YZ from 13 and half, loved it, but you have to quickly understand the power change the behavior of the bike on the take offs. Big brap = front wheel high!
I am Yami since a long time, but if you are open, TM 250 / 300, or KT/Husky 250 / 300 should make a happen man too !

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna try out my friends yz250 and see what I think. The kx250f was the pros spare bike, not his teams so it hasn't been ridden much, around 25 hours on the whole thing. I love my yz125, it feels soo good on the track but lacks power. I think the 2 stroke is for me.

Sorry for the typo, the 2 stroke is an 02 cr250r with every mod imaginable.

My son went up the latter 85's, super minis, 125s, 250Fs, and can ride my 450. I came across a deal on an 09 YZ250! He doesn't like riding it as much as the four stroke, makes him work harder, but he can ride it well. He is only 16! He has raced the two stroke when the 4 stroke was down and did well with it.

If you are anywhere near a"B" rider you should have no problem riding the 250 2 stroke....

Your'e plenty big enough for a 250.
I raced a YZ 400 and a YZ 125 when I was 16 years old and weighed 125 lbs, of course that was a long time ago (1977)

If your under 150 lbs get a 125.
And the award for "guy who comments without reading the whole thread " goes to......... Whistling

To the OP - get the 250 two stroke. I'm glad you clarified the year - I was wondering where in the world you managed to find a '14 CR250!
But if your already used to riding a two stroke, stick with what you know. You'll love the 250.

I read it. Just a my alternate way of saying "yea the 250 is great for your 6 foot tall kid"

My personal opinion, get the two stroke. I'm 170 lbs, B class-ish 30 year old. I have an '06 YZ250 and a '16 YZ250F. Nothing like a fresh bike, but it still just isn't as good as a 250 2T. I can't wait to finish rebuilding that two stroke and park the F. It handles worlds better.

Get the CR250R! I was 15 when I got my 89 CR250...It was Awesome Awesome Awesome...250 Two strokes are corner to corner ballistic missiles...When you learn how to ride em the acceleration is hard to beat...even with modern 450's...

What kind of terrain do you ride, and have you ridden the Honda yet? I owned an '02 CR250, and if it's modded, it might just be more of a handful to ride, than the stocker. Those things are all mid-range, with nothing but noise on either side of the powerband. More mid-range might not be the ticket for you. It will be okay in sand, but on hardpack, you might have your hands full.

The circuit I race is mainly hard pack with one sand track, we also have some sand pits that I ride. I'm going riding tomorrow and I will try my friends 2013 crf250r, it was actually jimmy d's girlfriends bike. If I don't like the power and weight of his 250, I'm gonna get the 2 stroke. Thanks again for the help.

Just get the 2 smoke, they are tons of fun and you can tweak them a ton to get them how you like. Little harder to ride fast though, they will wear you out.

Get the 2 stroke. Neither you nor your wallet will regret it.

2 strokes are fun to ride as a teen. Hell, they're fun to ride at just about any age..

I rode a 2006 YZ 250 a lot when I was 19. I was pretty small and still am. I was around 5'7" 140 lbs. I had a ton of fun on that bike. Couldn't keep the front wheel down haha. Now at 24 I'm 5'8" 160lbs. I've got a 2011 YZ 250. I can handle it just fine. Just ride one and go from there. But I wouldn't buy a used 4stroke unless I knew the person selling it. Just my 2 cent

You are the same size as me and I love my yz250. I rode a kx250f for a few laps once, came back in and got straight back on my two stroke.
If you are racing I would say you are on the heavy side for a 250f anyway. You are going to be racing guys 30-40 pounds lighter than you, that will put you at a disadvantage on the track

Go the 250 two stroke. If you're worried about power just remember the bike will only go as hard as you twist the throttle.

I bought a new kx 250 in 2000 when I was 16. 5'7", 145lbs. I had no problem adapting to and racing it that summer. Sold my 1997 cr125 (167) shortly after.

I went from 125's to 250's (2 stroke) at 16. I will say that the 02 Cr250 was probably my favorite bike, ever. Light, and for whatever reason I loved to power delivery (many didn't). I ditched the POS mikuni early for a Keihin and never looked back. Wish I had that bike back.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna finish this season racing my 125 and move up to a 250 over the winter (Manitoba sucks) My first post on this site and I would say it was a success.
