I think his retirement is dependent on how 2017 goes for him, if it's as good as it's been the past few years I bet it's his last year. If he gets his shit together and can win again I think we see him out there past 2017.

if he can win, even just one race, he will retire. I think he wants to end his career on a positive note and I get it. to retire now would be kind of shit. he is one of most talented people ever to ride a dirt bike and I really hope he has a good '17.

Does he even have a ride for next year? When does his current contract end?

I'm pretty excited about what he has the ability to do post-racing. He seems like a pretty innovative guy and seems ok with doing things "different." I imagine he could do some pretty cool stuff once he's done riding and needs to fill some time

I think James wants to get another win and go out on a high note. I feel the same is true for Chad. I hope both of them can make that happen.

For James, having children changes things. I think it will either spark his desire and fuel his ambition even more or will cause him to reflect on his past, what he's accomplished and realize he can end it now and get out [relatively] healthy. He's earned whatever path he chooses.

Can he afford to retire? He is used to living pretty large. Hopefully we'll never see his name on the broke athlete list.

Pretty sure his Suzuki contract does say "until retirement"

He's yellow until he retires. Then Kawasaki will jump in and make him brand ambassador so that he can work with Team Green kids on 85's at his compound.

Honestly he should call it over at the end of this season. He is one of our sports greatest champions, and has done it all.

But it's very clear to me it's over. Suzuki should just make him a brand ambassador for 2017.

Pretty sure they don't want him They have they're legends in place.

I have a feeling he is one of the big reasons Kawasaki now just tells a rider, "just ride it the way it is"

Maybe he will purchase RCH next year and run his own team?

Well it all depends on his will to prepare and compete for a full season and that cannot be disputed by any ham and egger. It's one thing to want to win but it is an entirely a different thing to actually to the work to prepare to win. Lets face it, gone are the days when anyone, not just James, can just show up on the gate and dominate.

I want him to retire solely due to that fact that he is slowly killing off the legend be built. The things he used to do on a motorcycle were absolutely jaw dropping, still some of the most amazing shit I've ever seen. So seeing him mosey around in 6th or 7th place really puts a damper on what was once the greatest show on dirt. I'd rather see him hang it up than slowly suffocate his own legacy. Just a fan's opinion.

Yeah, I think he signed with Suzuki until at least 2018...or until he packs it in.

I'd like to see the guy rip off a win before he quits. I think he has more potential for that than Chad Reed, if he gets his physical side on track. Who knows? Mostly, I just want to see the guy out there being exciting and fast until he decides he's had enough...then to leave healthy & happy.

I wish him luck. It's possible Dungey will retire at the end of 2017 too. Would be cool if they both retired near the top of their game.

Doesn't matter how long he rides, it doesn't change how amazing many of his rides in the past have been.

One of those guys has won the last 2 SX championships along with last year's MX championship while the other one hasn't won a championship since 2009. If they were both to retire next year, one of them won't be retiring anywhere near the top of their game.

Amazing how James is still one of the most polarizing figures in the sport. Even if he never wins again the last couple years will fade from the our collective memories imho. Eventually these struggles will be a footnote and he will surely be one of the faces of the American motocross version of Mt Rushmore.

It's kind of surreal when you think about it. James is definitely a legend in this sport. I hate to see the guy go , but like most have already said....father time waits for no man.

Here is one of my cool little stories on something I saw James do one day at Washougal. Me and this kid Andy ( a kid I was helping and working with in mx ) got up to the track that morning and were walking around. I saw James go by a couple times in a section that was leading up to the jump called " Leech's lump ". I thought I saw him do something.....but that " No way did he just do that??!! "

I grabbed Andy and we walked over to Leech's lump and waited for James to come around again. James comes up the little strait away with a small quad leading up to it just completely pinned on that 125. Right at the very bottom of the jump , he was using this 1' tall braking bump.....to pre-jump the entire Leech's lump!! He wasn't more than about 1' off the ground , but cleared that thing completely without ever touching it! It was freaking incredible to see....and me and Andy just stood there with two big shit eating grins on our faces saying..." No Effing way!!! Haha!! "

Going to be a sad day to see James go for sure.

Agreed. Just believing in the slim chance Stewart trains and comes to A1 ready. Top of their game to me is more about the best they can be today (or in this case 2017).

I see what you're saying David , but some people seem to forget , just two short years ago......the 2014 SX season. James was on it and if I remember right , had the most wins that season as well. He rode phenomenal that year in SX.
