2012 KTM 350sx vs 2013 KTM 350sx

Edited Date/Time 11/14/2012 6:17pm
I just sold one of my motorcycles and have some spare cash. My local dealer has new 2012 350sx's for $6,500 OTD the 2013 is $8,600. Is there that big of a difference? I would rather save the cash and go with the 12 but don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

I just read the MXA test and comparison between 12 -13 models and those guys say the 2013 is way better. Dammit! I don't want to spend $8,400. What OTD prices are some of you guys seeing on the 13's?

It will be interesting to hear from someone who has ridden both. It would be even better if you got the chance to ride both. The new '13 350 really seems to be getting some rave reviews. I rode the '11 and wasnt impressed. I am hanging to get a ride on the '13. Good luck.

I rode the 13 and it was awesome! It's why I really want one. I did ride the 12 a year ago but I didn't really get the bug when I rode it.

I would say get the '13, it took me about $2k in a pipe, programmer and suspension work to get it where I was happy with it. That being said I bet the '13 still makes more power than my '11. Oh well, it will be 2yrs before I get another one.

I had a 11' 350, had an exhaust, quick turn throttle, 2 teeth up on the rear sprocket and the 12 mapping with the aggressive setting . It was a great bike. I bought a 13' 350 about a month ago and have been riding it a lot. All I did to it is put the little map switch on "wild" and a fmf rct 4.1 slip on, and the suspension is done. Didnt even gear it, no need it is way more powerful than the 11. The 13' has torque where the 11 was more a mid/top, the 13' is another level up and closer to a 450. For the majority of people it is more than you need. The 11-12 is a great bike the 13' is better in every way.

I just heard back from my dealer and he said $7900 OTD for the 13. I'm gonna do it . Thanks for the input guys Smile

I am a KTM dealer and have ridden both. You made the right decision. You would have to spend alot more money to get the 12 up to the 13's hp. The 13 350 is KTM's best MX bike hands down.

What's the easiest/cheapest way to shave some weight off the 13 350?

I owned the 2012 and hated it. I was blown away by how much better the 2013 was. The 2013 is dramatically better. Revs up way faster. Within 50 feet you could tell it was a way different bike. Way more power and felt lighter. My experience with my 350 was enough to deter me from buying another but I will say that the 2013 was way better.

Congrats on the purchase. Put up some pics after you get it home. I'd love to ride a '13 350sxf. Motocross action's test really sounded impressive.

Doing well, thanks. I was actually in Bend for a couple of days last week, but I didn't have much time to get out and about.

The Tubliss setup will only "save" weight if you had upgraded to heavy duty tubes. They are basically a bald bicycle tire with a tube in them. Not lighter than a standard lightweight tube. And they are a pain to mount a front tire on. Rear wasn't too bad but the front sucked donkey balls and leaks. Gotta take mine back off and make sure I didn't bugger the new tire wrestling it on the rim. Literally can't get the front tire down into the rim with the Tubliss in it.

On the 350 to shave weight start with the battery everyone else mentioned. That's three pounds. As I mentioned above, don't think the Tubliss setup will save weight unless you are the type who puts those heavy ass tubes in to begin with. Depending on where you ride though, sand tires will often times weigh a couple pounds less than intermediate terrain tires. Gotta weigh those to verify which ones are light. Next would be to start weighing pipes. Stock mufflers are quite heavy and if the pipe itself is stainless, a complete Ti or ti/carbon system would probably save upwards of three pounds. Then a Ti rear shock spring will be good for another 1 1/2 - 2 pounds. After that you will start getting into some money. Ti hardware is expensive and you'll spend probably three grand to knock off 2 pounds.

Most importantly, just keep in mind that most aftermarket hubs, spokes and triple clamps will weigh more than stock. Full graphic kits weigh about a pound so don't go sticker crazy. And ANY accessory will only add weight.

Don't forget to wrap a small piece of graprics vinyl around the aluminum subframe where the airbox/inner fender wraps around it. The plastic rubbing and vibrating against the aluminum will wear it thin and it can eventually break close down by the lower mounts.

I've ridden both of them. I also just purchased a 13 450 SXF which I dearly love! As for the 350's? There is a considerable noticeable difference between the 13 and the 12. The 13 is better (faster, handles better)and if I'm buying new,I'd get the 13 no doubt. I'm a bigger, faster vet.......195 lbs.50+ and I'd go with the new 13 for 2 grand more, because I keep my bikes for quite a while. You will need 0 upgrades for the 13 KTM. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Newman, much appreciated. Another question for you, if I wanted to have the KTM dealer get my frame painted orange like your 150 how much do you think I should expect to pay for it? Also, did you powdercoat it or paint it? Is there a specific orange paint you can refer me (like a pantone color or something?)

I just added a 350 to my collection last week. On a fast track I really like it but on a tight track I was disappointed. I'm taking it out today too mess with the suspension and I'm going to try the hand mounted aggressive curve. It is a nice bike but right now I prefer my Pro Circuit 250F I built.

I wouldn't let the dealer do your frame unless they are going to cut you a good deal. Just tear it down yourself and find a good powdercoater in your area.

Is your 350 a '13? Just asking as I was thinking of selling my 150 and trying to find a deal on a '13 350.

I have rode the 12 & 13 350 and the 13 is an awesome bike I wasn't impressed with the 12 when I rode it. I like my 450 but I think if I was buying a 13 the 350 would be the bike. Very torquey down low but revs out like a 250 F it was awesome

I painted my frame. Being in the collision repair business and not having a powdrecoater close by made that choice a little easier for me. Having the dealer tear a bike down to the bare frame and put it all back together? Not sure how much that would cost, but sounds expensive. Besides, that's just one of those things I would have to do myself. One odd item KTM has is the T pipe for the coolant. There is a special tool required to remove it. That thing is Loctite'd in place I guess and I could not get mine loose without potentially destroying it. That would most likely need to be removed to powdercoat. Bare frames usually run about $200.00 to powdercoat.

It's not any less expensive to paint when you start buying all the paint products necessary to do a good job. I used a Glasurit (BASF) single stage urethane auto paint, code CMS 7036A if you decide to go that route. Excellent match.
