Hey guys my dad has an 07 CRF450r as stated in the title. He has been having a really hard time starting the bike. He started having these issues this year. He wrecked last October and hung the boots up for the rest of the season and the bike sat in the garage until about March when he tried to start it for the first time since he wrecked. Any ideas on what it might be? Bad fuel? Clogged carb? Just trying to get some ideas before we tear into it.

Thank you

Yes and yes. Check carb and valves typical reasons for hard starting

Bad fuel and a clogged carb are your best places to start. Maybe change out the plug just for shits and giggles. Maybe a valve adjustment at the same time.

Was it hard to start before it sat for so long? If so... valves. If not... carb/fuel.

Drain the old gas out, replace.
Replace carburetor jets (you can clean, but they're pretty cheap).

If it's still hard to start, you need (at least) to adjust the valves, specifically the intake. Once you shim them, take a look at your hour meter. 5 hours from then, you'll probably start having issues again. Prepare to have some head work done.

No the bike would fire up 2nd kick every time...he has to kick it at least 20 times before if starts up and runs.

Yep, start with the carb as recommended, that's most likely the problem. Good luck!

just dusted the cobwebs off of my 07 crf450 as well. It set for about 18 months. Mine would not start, i felt like maybe i flooded it while tring to get it fired up so i dropped in a fresh spark plug and it has been running great. Lucky me didnt have to touch the carb at all!

Plugged pilot jet and starter jet. Just remove them , clean and put them back in. It should start.
FYI: Todays gas leaves a very hard clear deposit in these jets as the holes are so small. Carb cleaner spray and air will not clear them.

When a friend's 06' Honda 450 became hard to start, it meant that he was about to spend $1,500.

Replace the pilot, and main jets. They are cheap, less than 10$ for the pair. Check the valves. Run the intakes at 6 and the exhausts at 12.

I've never had any luck cleaning jets even with a proper tool. As was said replace with new. Good luck.

Well we took the carb apart and it was a little congested so we cleaned it all out and put in some fresh fuel and it's still hard to start...it started a little easier but still not like how it use to start.

Did you pull each jet out and clean them individually?
Also....Try adjusting the idle screw to raise the idle speed when starting. It should start easier and then idle it down when warmed up.
Also...you may want to try and turn the throttle 2 or 3 times before starting. This adds extra fuel and on the 2005-2008 CRF's it does help with the starting when the engine is cold.

Yes sir we pulled each jet out individually and cleaned them then installed...he also does that with the throttle but he is concerned as to why he has to do all of these extra things to start it when he never had any issue with this bike ever.

I'd definitely check the valves.
