200% NOOB!

Edited Date/Time 1/27/2012 9:18am
Hi everyone!

I have been thinking about motocross ever since....I don't even remember :-)

And now I have the chance to purchase my first bike. Its going to be a used ride, but I have no idea what to look.

Otherwords, the man/lady I'm going to buy the used bike can tell me ANYTHING and I don't have a chance to know rather he is telling the truth or not.

So I hope you guys here in the forum can help me out on this one! My budget is 4500 dollars. And so far dealer told me that I should go for Honda CRF450.

So what should I go for, and how can I guard my self against a "stupid-purchase" that is over priced??! Welcome all your inputs!

I'm new to this one, so please email me, as I don't really know how to find back to this forum thread again!

Thank you all! :-)

What do you mean? I have no clue what you are trying to say, If I don't know anything then how should I go get more knowledge? What is wrong with 4500 dollars and newbie? Is this a bad combination?

You might want to see if your local track has a message board, or if there is one for the area you live in. Get to know some of the regulars and ask for some assistance from folks that you will most likely see out at the track.

Your best bet is to buy a new 2008 Honda CRF450. Right now Honda has $2000 off, you should be able to find a local dealer willing to sell one for $4500. I do not know where your located but if your near NE PA we have one left that I would sell for that.

I have a 2000 Cr-250 I'll sacrifice to a beginning rider for $4500. I hate to do it, but if it will bring a new person into the sport, I will manage.

JMO but I'd start with a 250 if I were you. 450 may be a bit much for a new rider.

This guy's trying to rip you off.
Why bother with his 2000 CR250 when I'm willing to sell you mine for the same amount- and mine's 3 years newer. It's way better, Honda even said so.

Don't believe him, everyone knows it takes a good 9 years to break a bike in.

Ok thank you for all the response!

Ok first thing first! How smart is it to order a bike via ebay? I mean I've ordered alot from ebay but never a thing this large such as a bike! Is this smart?

Secondly, some say Yamaha other say Honda, which one is the best in terms of "durability and minimal maintenance"? Not because I don't want to maintain my bike, but its cool to get that extra durability.

Thirdly, the box during registration wasn't checked, but I'm not in USA, I'm in Europe Denmark. Anyway, we have a private shipping company to deal with such things, what I want to know is how much it cost MORE to ship the machine outside USA.

If this is a problem that can be solved then I need 2 bikes!

Bike 1: Budget 4500 dollars
Bike 2: Budget 3600 dollars

I didn't knew the price in USA, since the price is that low and Honda is giving 2000dollars off I might as well get a brand new one!

A mx rider told me that Honda has the special two chamber system, one for the clutch and one for the gears, which makes them "low-maintenance" and the rider told me that Honda is the "Mercedes" of the dirtbikes, they just keep running.

But again! Another one told me Yamaha has the 5 valve thing! What use do I get from the 1 extra valve?

If some of you are dealer and are happy to ship outside USA and you can give me a good price I might take 3 bikes in a row!

Let me know! Thank you!

And NO, I'm not related to Carlos Sastre! Smile

You cant buy bikes in Eroupe?

seems like you could spend more on the bike and less on shipping.

If your a beginner and no larger than about 220 pounds than get a 250.

If your built like Ken De Dyker you might need the 450, but if you havnt rode before youll end up in a cast faster than you can say Whiskey throtle on a 450

my two cents

Of course we can buy bike in europe they just cost around 11000+ dollars for the EXACTLY same bike! Which is pretty insane!

I was trying a Honda CRF250 and that thing didn't felt "right". I think 450 is the one to go.

Anyway, no matter the location if a dealer in here is interessted to ship outside he can get money for at least 2 bikes right away!

I got a 21 hours "new" Honda CRF450R 2008 model.

How do you guys tell the difference between 2007 and 2008 WITHOUT trying it out or turning it on?

The appearance is identical, the only thing noticeable is the braking discs, in 2007 it is totally circular, in 2008 it is circular with serrations all the way around teh brake disc edge.

Is this is the only cosmetic difference?? How can I be sure that the model I buy IS ACTUALLY a 2008?
Because I'm a beginner, so probably I won't even notice between 2007 and a 2008.

Please help me out! :-(

Try getting a bike from germany, will be cheaper than in denmark, and you can drive up there.

you can buy a new rmz 250 or crf 250 for like 5500 euro in germany

try mobile.de its a big market for cars but almost every bike dealer inserates there too...

for 4500 you can get good used bikes and denmark and germany are like no distance....

with all the laws i think it will be a big hustle to ship a bike from us to eu, especially with costums and stuff...

i mean shipping for little stuff is like 50-100 bucks....so a whole bike will be of the charts i guess

The 10th number in the "VIN", or vehicle identification number, should be the year of manufacture.

Or you can just look at the sticker on the steering head.

imo 4500 dollars is alot to spend on your 1st bike. Id start lower and make sure its what you want to do, and also you are gonna crash , it happens to all of us. So if you are ready for repairs on that new bike , then by all means spend the 4500.

I agree. You can buy a pretty good year, '05 or so, 250 smoker or even a 450 for alot less than 4500. Then invest the rest of that cash into quality gear and fixing stuff when it breaks. Dirtbikes aren't for everyone so make sure it's something you are going to be able to put the time and money into, while still enjoying it, before you go too balls to the wall.

Good luck!
