I am 27 years old and have often heard 'older' people talking about a phone number you could call back in the day to get race results. I have grown up in the world of the internet so I don't know what this means.

$2.00 for the first minute and then $0.99 for each minute after that!

I was searching for some things before school today and I found this advertisement in the back of American Motorcyclist.

At one point, the holeshot award was sponsored by 1-900-PRO-RACE. They advertised during the telecasts (which weren't live then, of course). McGrath had his own version of this during the same time period, too.

They were talking about it on the Pulp MX show Monday night. Before my time.

I do remember calling information, weather, and time though. Just wasn't into moto back then.

That's a 900# for motoporn back in the day. I wore that thing out for about a month in 1989 till my mom hit me up for the 20 bones I ran up. I would pirate call from my buddies houses when they weren't payng attention, never got caught. It was about 10 years before 1800 collect.

Later Cycle News provided live written online updates and in a few years after that we went to the audio webcast of supercross. Now after all these years it's a great thing that we actually have live television coverage of Supercross!

This was the start of it all. When you couldn't watch the race or wait until Thursday for Cycle News, just dial the 11 digits. I can remember my Mom seeing the phone bill and thinking I was calling "Loveline" or some singles phone sex stuff. I just blamed my brother of course.

Remember this: "Howdy out there race fans, thanks for calling 1-900-INF-MOTO with your up to the minute race results"
Anyone know who that was?

Wasn't the guy that had that from Oklahoma or Texas? I think I met him in the press box at Texas Stadium one year.

He was actually from Arizona his name was Glenn he used to give us t shirts and stickers and under the guise of 1 900 info we pretended we were motocross reporters for him.

I got interviews from all the top riders from Roger DeCoster, Bob Hannah, McGrath, Emig everybody even the old school guys like Brad Lackey epic video interviews and they were all done on a 8mm camera.

At the time I worked for the airlines and would fly for free. I would hook up my cuz and he did the camera work while I worked the microphone it was so funny as these guys had no idea who I was but I would see them from week to week and they would give me all the info they could classic stuff that would have you rolling. Smile

I need to get them digitized but that has not happened I have literally hours and hours of video tape from tracks all around the world with at least 50 riders including road racers Freddie Spencer Troy Corser etc.

So would it be a pre-recorded piece that you listened to for the week or would there be options for what you wanted to hear? Like press 1 for motocross, 2 for superbike, 3 for flat track?

Been there, done that. I remember it took a very long time to find out who won the supercross race that weekend, more money for them. Did it a few times till I got my phone bill. I also remember watching Wide World Of Sports on ABC for the USGP at Carlsbad once a year when I was a kid. Or staying up after midnight to see 30 minutes of a Supercross race from weeks before, back then Motoworld TV show was a good source for week or two old news. And you had to subscribe to Cycle News to get all the racing news sent to your mailbox not your inbox. We have it so good now and when people bitch and moan about the coverage or the announcers I just laugh to myself.

I don't know, I never called the number.

We were moto pit reporters BEFORE there were moto pit reporters. Smile

Yup, exactly. Usually the SX main event results were posted(?) or should I say recorded within 5 minutes of the checkered flag. Pretty cool stuff because the guy was usually really amped-up when he did the voice over, like he pounded about 50 Red Bulls. I think it was only around for a few years but I could be wrong. I used to call for every race back in 1991 and 1992.

I wonder where people would go to complain about the "announcer" on the other end of the line when they called in?

I used to call that number every weekend! I remember him being really slow with the results and details to milk the most minutes from each call. lol
