what is the extension (avi, mpeg, divx, etc.) ?

I believe most are AVI.

Converting to WMV or MPEG would be ideal, right?

try updating your codecs first before you bother converting anything.

Go to http://www.divx.com, or google "ffdshow", I think you will be happier going this route first.

but does the free version only give you 3/4 of the file? seems to be stuck at 76%

add video on " file>add video to convert" after hit " + " on video and config settings like this
