7/11/2005 8:28 PM ![]() ...I was standing right next to the camera when that Bradshaw jump was filmed. he ran his 125 wide open in fifth gear across the dam at David's pond by his practice sx track and hit that thing hard. You can see on the footage that he's up by the tops of the trees... and they weren't small trees!Very cool... I noticed that about those trees, they were large and he was at the top of them...also it was funny how he checked out the rims on his bike - kicking at them - before the jump... Great old school - the cliff climbs and verts, the slomo of Bailey racing... |

7/11/2005 10:06 PM David is simply an amazing individual. He is the definition of a positive attitude, and shows respect to everybody he meets.
I was at his school and there was a kid who couldn't do a start. He was crying and David showed him so much attention and care. I hope this won't be seen as spam, but the interview I did with him in the new issue was very special for me: w http://www.motoeastmag.com w He said some great stuff about "going out on top" and his 86 battle with RJ. He said his main goal was to not just make RJ mad... What more can you say about the Icon? |

7/12/2005 6:52 AM There is no footage or photos of David's crash. They probably showed a different crash.

7/12/2005 8:29 AM This thread has really made me think back to what it was like around his family when he was injured. I know that some of you have experienced the same feelings when someone you knew was in a life changing situation like this.
I remember being in the apartment that Gina rented in San Jose to be near the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (where David was) with Gary and Darlene, when she came out of her room with a positive pregnancy test (Sean). David's lying in the hospital, and he's about to find out that he's going to be a dad. I remember filming the opening of "When the Going Gets Tough" with Gary outside L.A. where he is doing the opening message to David. It took quite a few takes for him to do it without crying. I remember the first time I walked in his room and he was laying there in shorts. His legs were in better shape than any I've ever seen, and they wouldn't move. Fast forward a short time later, and I remember helping carry him out of a van at Anderson, SC so that he could get on a four wheeler and attend his first national since the injury. I'm pretty sure that he would have rather just been alone. I remember all the people that chipped in to convert his two story home to be accessible. I remember rocking Sean to sleep in the living room. I remember vividly some guy calling his house and telling Gina that David was an asshole and that he was glad he was paralyzed. Can you even fathom that? I remember that entire time being totally depressing. I can't even imagine what it was like for David. I remember watching the results of his third Iron Man attempt on the internet and watching a clip of him crossing the finish line as the winner. Nothing can top that. |

7/12/2005 8:43 AM Kick-ass thread.
I forget who said that they're afraid to say more than hi to David. If you do that, you're missing out. David's a cool cat for sure. I don't want to discourage more responses, but I'm gonna nudge this one into the Hall of Fame. [url=http://www.vitalmx.com:jp7cpixt]Vital MX |

3/9/2009 1:47 PM I was there, and might have been the closest person to Dave at time of crash, i was standing inside the corner before the jump, i believe Dave was behind O'mara. I was focusing on O'mara or whoever the honda rider was, when Dave went around the corner and tried to launch off the small jump, it really wasnt that big of a jump and he endoed after hitting the kicker he was trying to clear.
At the time I didnt think he would have gotten hurt that bad. As i ran over to him the honda guys and decoster all came running down. David was pointing at his upper chest and sounded like he was haveing trouble breathing. Even then i thought he'd be ok. I bet he could have crashed there 100 times and walked away from it. Really tough deal for a great racer. |

Round two was at Lake Huron and it was marred by the tragic injury to my hero David Bailey. Huron had some tricky jump combinations, one of which was two small kickers at the start of a straight. No more than a couple of feet tall I was apprehensive at the thought that we may have to jump these. They were a long way apart and very sharp. I went out to watch the 250 guys practice and followed David Bailey's progress as he clicked off the tricky sections of the track with ease. As he came to the two small jumps he launched them but cased the second one. The landing jump had no backside to it to carry the front wheel and he flew over the bars. Not moving, he was soon surrounded by medical staff and eventually stretchered away. It never occurred to me that his injury was so serious. I saw Roger DeCoster walking through the pits afterwards and asked how David was. He just said "It doesn't look good". David's injury was a bombshell. Bailey was the most precise, calculating rider of all. His technique was perfect and style unmatched. If somebody like that could get hurt what are the chances for us? It really brought it home to me what a potentialy dangerous sport we had chosen to devote our life to. Only the week earlier at the first round I had raced without my chest protector. 'The good guys don't wear them because they're too restrictive', I had told myself. That outlook changed forever after seeing Bailey crash. During the races that day, and indeed for the next few times I rode all I could think about was Bailey getting hurt, and that at any point I could crash and it might be me next. It was not a good time for me mentally. The third race was up near San Francisco, and Bailey had been transferred to a hospital there. I had never met David, and I'm sure he had no idea who we were, but Mark, Chris, Ian and myself went to the hospital. We just announced that we were riders over from England and were shown in to see him. David was in good spirits, but laid on a rotating table which slowly kept him moving like a chicken on a spit. He seemed appreciative of our visit but it was very sad. |
