Gaming PC's

9/3/2012 4:40 AM

OK guys I thought I'd create a new thread to get some ideas and offer others' tips on what they need to play PC MX games online. The idea is to bounce some ideas off each other, share your PC set-up, etc.

I've been in the market for a new PC for a while but am ready to pull the trigger on one now. In another thread I got a few ideas off some other members as to what system requirements I'd need for racing Reflex online. I imagine they'd be similar for MX Sim?

I'm no computer genius but these are some of the basic requirements I've come up with:
* Quad core processor
* 4GB RAM
* minimum GTX560 1GB graphics card

I've been searching online (fleabay) as I live in a remote area and my local computer shop is hopeless and doesn't stock anything anyway.

This is an example of one I've found on ebay. What do you guys think? It has
* i7 3770K Quad core processor 3.5GHz
* 8GB RAM
* GTX 660 with2GB Ram graphics card
* 1TB HDD
It's $1391 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. Does this seem like good value? Am I missing anything? I can upgrade to 16GB RAM for $59. Would this be of any benefit? Any other upgrades you'd recommend?

Hey mate, I'd probably stick with a i5 unlocked, not much performance gains with the i7, as most program's don't take advantage of hyper threading, unless you do a lot of video editing,etc.

8gb ram is good, 16 is overboard.

Get a 120g ssd, install os and some program's on it. And keep document on second mechanical Hdd.

Don't get it off of eBay, get it thru a reputable store like pccasegear or scorptec. If you were closer I'd build it for you, it's easy and fun to do! Good self satisfaction firing up your first built pc.

9/3/2012 5:29 AM

Also, post what your after over at the desktop section of whirlpool.net.au they're great at recommending pc's within budgets, as mxsim is really basic, it doesn't need much to run on good settings

9/3/2012 11:19 AM

i bought a stock HP then upgraded the GPU

it came with i7 2600
9GB ram
1.5TB Hard disc
and i bought a nvidea gtx 670 4gb
i can run a 40 man gate national with all my settings maxed and get over 100 FPS. i also have all the replacement models. and when i say maxed, i literally mean the graphics are maxed, with zero stuttering.

i HIGHLY recommend sticking with nvidia cards.

Thanks Tobz. I checked out PC Case Gear and they have some great looking pre-built packages. I considered building my own (didn't look too hard on youtube ) but it seems for around $1500 I can buy a pre-built PC with what I need. What do you guys think of these?

i5 3570K Quad Core, 8GB RAM, 120g SDD, 2TB HDD, GTX660Ti 2GB Card for $1499

or

i5 3570K Quad Core, 8GB RAM, 120g SDD, 2TB HDD, GTX670 2GB Card for $1399.

I think I would upgrade to the CoolerMaster HAF 932 case for it's extra ventilation and extra fans due to the hot climate up north.

And I can add water cooling for $120 too!

Thoughts?

Either one is great, have a look at reviews for each GPU and weigh up if you think the price difference is worth it. Back when i bought a few things for my pc to handle BF3 better i went for a lower mode GPU but factory overclocked to which it had much better cooling, GTX570 twin frozr III from memory. so yeah, high numbers doesn't always = better performance.

Good idea on the case, water cooling is way overboard unless your going to overclocking the nuts off it.

But i would, in your situation, upgrade the CPU heatsink.

"upgrade the CPU heatsink"

Tobz you're dealing with a computer noob here

The water cooling I'm looking at is just a basic sealed unit, nothing too elaborate:

Gotta be honest though I'm a little concerned about having liquid inside a PC....

I have priced up a build-it-yourself option. It is based on the system listed above with the GTX670. It has:

i5 3570K Quad Core
8GB RAM
GTX 670 2MB
120gb SSD
2TB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
CoolerMaster HAF932 Case
Antec 900W power supply, rather than the 520W they have included in their system

Total price $1456

The 520 watt would be fine, 900w is way overkill.

Grab the coolermaster hyper 212 heatsink/fan.

How's this for a beast

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K $235
Mobo: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 $149
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4G DDR3-1600 $50

OK Tobz you just confused the fuck out of me. 2 GPU's?!?! I think that's a little overkill for what I need and a little out of my knowledge peripherals also! I'm struggling to keep up as it is!!!

I think I'm finally happy with a system I can piece together. It's based on what you have listed

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K $235
Mobo: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 $149
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4G DDR3-1600) $50
SSD: SanDisk Extreme 120GB $99
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB $88 (I really can't see myself using more than 1T
GPU: Galaxy 2GB Nvidia Geforce GTX660 Ti GC $349 (I will ask later about fan speed settings - a little over my head at the moment)
Case: CoolerMaster HAF 932 $169 (I've already talked myself into getting this case due to its ventilation)
PSU: CoolerMaster GX 750W $105 (a happy compromise)
ODD: DVD burner $22
CPU HSF: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO $36 (again with the fan control settings...later)
Soundcard: Asus Xonar DGX $36

Total $1441 (+ $105 freight to Nth QLD)

EDIT: do you need a separate sound card or are they built in to the GPU or something else? None of the systems on any sites list a separate sound card....

Dual gpu's. I agree are a little overkill and can cause more headaches than they're worth. Thinking about you'd be better off with 1 great gpu than 2 average gpu's, go the gtx 670 if you like.

Fan speed settings you can adjust with the bundled software, allows you to keep it an acceptable temperature with sounding like a jet taking off (will eventually drive you insane)

A sound card isn't neccesary, but I think they're worth it, but yes, your motherboard also has onboard sound.

And peripherals are just add ons, keyboard, monitor, etc, ignore if not needed

9/3/2012 11:21 PM

Well I've pulled the trigger and made the purchase. The final decision was to build it myself with the following components:

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K $235
MOBO: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 $149
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4G DDR3-1600) $55
SSD: SanDisk Extreme 120GB $99
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB $88
GPU: Galaxy 2GB Nvidia Geforce GTX670 $399
CASE: CoolerMaster HAF 932 $169
PSU: CoolerMaster GX 750W $105
ODD: DVD burner $22
CPU HSF: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO $36
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit $99
Plus a XBox type controller $39

Total $1495 which was my budget so I'm happy. Should be here in about a week so we'll see how the build goes....

Thanks for the help and advice

I emailed PCCG just to make sure all the components will work together and they said they would, but they suggested changing the RAM from the Corsair XMS3 to the Corsair Vengeance.

They said for an extra $4 it will increase the RAM speed from 1333MHz to 1600MHz.

Well, no. While the recommended wattage is a guide, what is most Importent is the total amperage available on the 12v rails. A good quality powersupply with a lower wattage is much more suitable than the cheap n nasty 1200w power supplies that you get bundled with prebuilt pc's.

9/15/2012 12:11 AM

That is a nice system.

Good tips there, as well tobz.

Also, if you know how much power the system will pull, it's a good idea to go 20% over. A 520w will not cut it for that machine....at least not in the long term.

Post pics when you get it put together.

Well I've done it. I'm posting this from my new computer that I built. I'm a computer noob/dummy so it shows just how (relatively) easy it can be. With a little help from some youtube videos it wasn't too hard. I was a little confused as to why I couldn't connect to the internet after I installed Windows 7 but then realised I hadn't installed the drivers (on the supplied CD's) for the motherboard and graphics card.

And IT'S AWESOME!!!! It is SOOOOOO much faster than my old PC it's ridiculous. Coupled with my ADSL2 my internet is now lightning fast.

The case is WAY bigger then I expected and need. But oh well there's plenty of room inside so nothing is crammed in and there is plenty of ventilation in there.

Big thanks to Tobz and the rest of you for your input. I learned a hell of a lot doing this and I'm real glad I did it. Very satisfying

Small problem.

When I open My Computer it only shows the SSD and my DVD drive. It doesn't show my 1TB HDD. When I go in to device manager it is there, but doesn't display in My Computer and also doesn't give me the option to save documents to my HDD.

A freind said I need to format it. He said to do this by going in to device manager and right clicking it and choosing initialise and format. But it doesn't give me the option of 'Initialise'. The options I get are Update Driver Software, Disable, Uninstall, Scan for hardware changes, and Properties. I have checked these and nowhere does it tell me how to format the HDD.

Any ideas???

You get Reflex from, along with many other games. I play with plenty of Aussies, but worldwide Reflex was only release as a download, anyways.

Just click on install steam in the top right corner and join some steam groups for whichever games you decide to buy.

Very nice job on the first build. It looks very clean.
