Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: Washougal 3

Consistently inconsistent seemed to be the theme of the day in the 450 class at Washougal for the eighth round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Sure, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Chad Reed topped the results with a 1-1 day, but behind him, you had Josh Grant (JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha) in second overall with a 5-2, and Jason Lawrence (Boost Mobile / ampm / Monster Energy / Troy Racing) taking third overall with a...10-3? That's a little odd.

The bad news for everyone in the fo-fiddy class is that Reed now has a 65-point lead. Normally we'd be working on the math to figure out when he might wrap up the championship, but the way this season is going with points leader, we wouldn't want to jinx him like that.

We'd like to say that the 250 class was a lot more consistent, but with a 1-5 taking the overall for Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, and a 8-1 grabbing third for Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel, that'd be a stretch. Only Blake Wharton's 3-3 for second overall aboard his Geico Powersports Honda, and Brett Metcalfe's 4-4 for fourth on his Geico Powersports Honda seemed relatively normal.

Who's got the points lead in the 250 class? That's a tug o' war between Ryan Dungey and Christophe Pourcel, who are tied on points with eight motos remaining.

The Women returned to the series for their annual visit to Washougal, and Honda of Houston's Jessica Patterson and Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek traded first and second-place moto finishes, with Patterson getting the overall nod, courtesy of her win in moto two. Fiolek still holds a 49-point advantage in the series standings, though.

Surprises for the weekend? That'd be the appearance of a couple international riders, including GP competitor Clement Desalle, who not only had good qualifiying times in practice with a torquey low-revving style that had to be seen to be appreciated; and a new competitor to the women's class, Japanese rider Haruna Masu, who rode one of the Geico Powersports Hondas to a second moto holeshot. She also ran ahead of a pack of more familiar competitors, leading several laps before a mistake dropped her several spots in the standings.
