Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: Red Bud

We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship campaign, and we’ve got another first-time winner in the 450 class, and more…

Last week at Thunder Valley MX in Lakewood, CO, we had a first-time winner in the 450 class, as Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ivan Tedesco scored an overall victory with a pair of moto wins. Josh Grant (JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha) may not have had the same perfect score, but his 2-1 tally was good for the overall win, the first of his career. Josh traded moto wins with Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed, who looked a lot more like his usual self after a somewhat sub-par weekend in Lakewood.

Speaking of Shorty, he looked like he was in line for the first 450 moto win of his career during the first moto of the day, but first Chad Reed, and then Josh Grant slipped past him as the laps wound down.

In the second moto, it was Tedesco who had the early lead, but Grant took over the lead one third of the way in. Chad Reed put on a charge to try and take away second from Tedesco on the last lap, and the two riders came together in the last corner, but they both stayed up, and Tedesco was able to edge out Reed.

The overall for the day featured Josh Grant (2-1) as the winner, with Reed (1-3) in second, and Tedesco (4-2) in third. Reed continues to lead the series, and now sports a 21-point lead over Andrew Short.

In the 250 class, the action was no less frantic. A big crash in the first sweeper in the first moto took down nearly a quarter of the field, including 250 series points leader Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki). So like he did when he got tangled in the gate last weekend, Pourcel had to start near the back of the pack and put in a huge charge toward the front. He was scored in 24th place at the end of the first lap, and he made his way back to eighth by the end of the moto.

Meanwhile, up front, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey was trying to take full advantage of Pourcel’s misfortune, by taking the moto win and not only erasing the series points lead that Pourcel had, but to give himself a two-point lead, and that’s exactly what happened. The tables were turned in moto two, however, as Dungey went down in spectacular fashion, and he could only muster an eighth-place finish on his bent and twisted bike.

Tommy Searle (Muscle Milk MDK KTM) showed once again that he’s figuring out the pace of the U.S. series, scoring a fifth and a second to take the final podium spot.

In the end, it was Weimer, taking his second straight overall with a 2-4, Pourcel in second with an 8-1, and Searle grabbing another podium with a 5-2 day.

The series takes a week off before heading to Millville, MN. Be sure to check back on Vital MX then for full coverage.
