Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: Millville

Chad Reed lead everyone into the first turn in moto one.

This year’s trip to Millville greeted the riders with a faster course than ever, as some modifications to the circuit provided lap times that were hovering at the 2:03 range for the fastest overall rider, who happened to be Christophe Pourcel on his Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX250F.

JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha’s Josh Grant had a tough week, going down hard during a mid-week practice session, which left him extremely sore. But it was awfully hard to see that in the first moto, as he grabbed the early lead and powered to the win. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Chad Reed put on a spirited challenge, but he couldn’t quite match the pace of Grant late in the motos.

The surprise of the first moto had to be Michael Byrne, who despite a crash early on, and a malfunctioning muffler late in the moto, moved his way through the pack to grab third spot.

In the second 450 moto, it was Ivan Tedesco getting the early jump, but he only held the lead for a couple laps before being displaced by Chad Reed. Reed continued on to finish the day with a 2-1 score, which helped extend his series points lead to 37 over Andrew Short, who hold another 12 points over his teammate, Ivan Tedesco.

As for first moto winner Josh Grant, he wheelied on the start of the second moto, and then went down in the first turn, so he spent the rest of the moto playing catch-up. He charged throughout, and ended up in tenth spot.

Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps finished third in the second moto, and definitely would have had a much better day overall if he hadn’t suffered a DNF in the first moto while running in third.

Ryan Dungey.

In 250 class action, it was all Ryan Dungey’s day on his old home turf of Millville. Ryan gave the local fans plenty to cheer about, leading nearly every lap of the first moto, and all but a handful of laps in the second…and those were led by Geico Powersports Honda’s Justin Barcia, who holeshot the second moto.

With his 1-1 moto finishes, Ryan moves to within three points of a tie for the series lead, which is still held by Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel. The speedy Frenchman had an off day on his first visit to Millville, never getting quite comfortable on his KX250F. But he rode smart and left with a pair of seconds to add to his points total.

Third on the day was Barcia, whose 3-3 edged out Brett Metcalfe’s 4-4. Actually, some of the best racing of the day was between the two Geico Powersports Honda riders…but they both rode hard but fair, which is really fun to watch.

What’s next for the series? It moves westward, for the annual visit to the Pacific Northwest, and the forested hills of Washougal, WA. We’ll be there next week, and be sure to check out the action on Vital MX.
