Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship: High Point

The first round of the Monster Energy Triple Crown provided a race within a race at the fourth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship series, and the two guys who struggled with stomach issues at Freestone came out strong with 1-1 days. They both also took over the point leads in their respective classes.

In the 450 class it was Chad Reed (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), who took over where his recently injured teammate, Mike Alessi was last weekend, winning both motos. The first moto was relatively easy for him, where he traded the lead with Honda Red Bull Racing's Andrew Short early in the moto, but then remained unchallenged until the end. The second moto, however, provided some different challenges. The first was Honda Red Bull Racing's Ivan Tedesco, who led for the first two-thirds of the race. When Reed finally worked his way past, Tedesco stalled his bike, which seemed like it would make things easier for Reed. But a lap or two later a large chunk of wood in a rutted corner caused Chad to crash, and also took down several other riders, including Tedesco.

Chad's 1-1 was good for the overall, ahead of Short's 2-2, and Tedesco's 3-3. It was Reed's first 450 overall, and it also propelled Reed into the points lead in the 450 class, something that he joked that he was hesitant to take, considering that everyone who'd held it so far this year (Villopoto and Alessi) both ended up injured. With the lead that Alessi had after Freestone, he still holds second overall in the series, and rumor has it that despite his surgically-repaired kneecap, he'll be on the line when the series returns to action in two weeks in Colorado.

Notable in Saturday's results were Michael Byrne's fourth overall on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki, his best of the season. Also, Ricky Dietrich's sixth overall. His plans for the weekend include not only Saturday's National in Pennsylvania, but a WORCS race in Washington on Sunday for the Monster Energy Kawasaki squad. Now that's Ironman material right there.

Christophe Pourcel.

In the 250 class, Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) continued his string of first moto wins, which he's scored at each National so far this year. But the second moto looked like a war between Trey Canard (Geico Powersports Honda), who lead from the drop of the gate. Canard has been hungry for a moto win, and for the bulk of the second moto it looked like he might get it. But with two laps to go in the final moto, he crashed heavily, breaking an arm in the process. It was a huge disappointent both for Canard, and for the fans who have been enjoying watching him race this season. Pourcel continued on to a 1-1 day and his second overall of the season.

Dungey's 3-2 was good for second overall, and Tommy Searle (KTM) nabbed the final podium spot with a 4-3 day. Searle has been picking up the pace over the last couple rounds, and seems to be acclimating well to the series. The other MX GP import for this season, MX2 World Champ Tyla Rattray, finished with a 5-4 score, and fourth overall. Pourcel is sporting a two-point lead heading into the two-week break before Colorado, and he'll be sporting the red points leader plates on his bike for the next race.

In the women's class, Ashley Fiolek (Honda Red Bull Racing) continued her dominance of the season, taking two more moto wins ahead of Jessica Patterson (4-2), Sherri Cruse (3-3) and Vicki Golden (2-4). JP did lead for a bit, but appeared to have a crash that dropped her back out of contention in the first moto.
