First Look: 2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 10

Ready for a first look at the new Suzukis? Here goes...

The RM-Z250 features a redesigned chassis and suspension, including the all-new Showa Separate Function front Forks (SFF). The 2013 RM-Z250 engine is also more potent than ever thanks to revisions made to the piston, connecting rod and piston pin, as well as updated intake and exhaust cams. The result is improved mid-range torque and acceleration, which lets riders accelerate harder out of turns and power by the competition on the straights. Additionally, the RM-Z250 is equipped with a new 5-speed transmission with revised gears and shift cam for smooth, precise shifting and a revised clutch release cam shape for improved clutch feel. New Dunlop MX-51 tires complete the RM-Z250’s package.

The RM-Z450's updates include a new lighter piston, revised piston pin and connecting rod as well as a new intake cam for stronger mid-range torque and crisper throttle response. Complementing the engine improvements is a transmission update featuring revised gear shapes to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears, along with a new shift cam to help deliver smoother and more precise shifts. The RM-Z450 also comes with the all-new Showa Separate Function front Forks (SFF). The new front suspension works with an updated twin-spar aluminum frame to further optimize the balance between rigidity and high-speed traction.

Both RM-Z models include two electrical couplers (one rich and one lean coupler) that quickly allow the rider to adjust the fuel setting to suit track conditions. Fuel settings can easily be changed to best suit the riding conditions by just connecting either coupler, all without using tools. A brand new option for 2013 – riders can now easily track engine-operating time and better manage maintenance intervals using Suzuki’s optional FI indicator light (Part #36380-28H00).

Key Features
In 2011 Suzuki introduced the coupler system to the RM-Z450. The 2013 RM-Z450 uses this innovative design, which consists of three couplers that allow you to quickly adjust the fuel setting to suit riding conditions. One coupler contains the stock settings, a second is for a richer fuel setting than the stock setting and the third is for a leaner setting.

All-new Showa Separate Function front Fork (SFF) separates spring and damping functions. The right leg holds the spring, while the left leg incorporates the cartridge assembly to manage damping. The SFF design reduces friction, increased absorption performance and is lighter weight resulting in remarkably smooth performance over a variety of track conditions.

Redesigned 5-speed transmission with reshaped shift cam, stopper spring and drive shaft results in more solid shift feel, enabling more precise gear shift operation.

Riders can now track engine-operating time and better manage maintenance intervals using the optional FI indicator (Part no. 36380-28H00).

Engine Features

  • Compact and lightweight 4-stroke, 449cc, fuel-injected, DOHC engine provides extraordinary torque for awesome acceleration from idle to redline, with incredible high-rpm power.
  • The newly designed piston, piston pin and connecting rod are developed with use of Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. The new piston is 13 percent lighter without any compromise to strength and rigidity.
  • The new piston pin has Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) surface treatment for less friction and increased durability. The new design reduces mechanical loss and helps the engine produce quicker throttle response.
  • Intake cam timing and amount of lift has been modified for smoother power delivery and control.
  • Aluminum cylinder, with Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coating, is designed for durability, light weight and efficient heat transfer.
  • An advanced battery-less fuel-injection (FI) system features a 12-hole fuel injector and progressive throttle linkage for instant throttle response.
  • A new ECM with higher processing performance and a new high power ignition coil optimize combustion efficiency for increased roll-on performance.
  • Redesigned muffler internal parts, bottom-to-mid range power and torque are increased, resulting in improved performance without losing top end. The new muffler body now uses conventional bolts in end cap instead of rivets to simplify the replacement of the glass wool packing in the muffler.

Transmission Features

  • Redesigned 5-speed transmission with reshaped shift cam, stopper spring and drive shaft results in more solid shift feel, enabling more precise gear shift operation.

Chassis Features

  • Front fork inner tube diameter is increased from 47mm to 48mm, results in optimized stability and absorption. The spring pre-load is now adjustable, which allows a wider range of adjustment for all level of riders.
  • The frame and seat rail have been refined for optimized rigidity balance. The result is an ideal balance of nimble handling and stability.
  • To maintain the RM-Z's renowned handling performance, each bike's rear suspension features a Showa Piggyback shock with setting changes and adjustments to best match with the increased engine performance and front forks changes. The design allows enhanced suspension performance for a wider variety of riders.
