Just when you think the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross series couldn’t get much better…well, we traveled to Jacksonville, FL for the first time. That’s where James Stewart and Chad Reed dropped the gloves and really laid it on the line as they duke it out for Supercross supremacy. No, they didn’t throw blows, but there was some on-track contact, and post-race discussions…both on the track and on the podium afterwards.

Chad Reed grabbed the holeshot, just edging out his Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate, Mike Alessi. Mike had an early crash that caused him to lose a couple spots, while James Stewart moved into second spot and began to chip away at Reed’s lead. James didn’t seem to be in a hurry to move out front and show off his lines, but when they started mixing it up in the middle of the race, it became a back-and-forth chess game of passing and repassing. The aggression escalated, and there was one big moment where the two of them hit in mid-air.

During one of the skirmishes, Reed’s fork guard got knocked out of place, and he backed it down a bit. That allowed Stewart to build just enough gap to get away, and he cruised in to his tenth race win of the season.

Kevin Windham (Geico Powersports Honda) was the third guy on the podium this weekend.

Christophe Pourcel.

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel wrapped up his Lites East championship season with another win (his fifth). To get there he had to overcome a bad start spot caused by a heat race stall, and work his way from fourth at the start.

Muscle Milk MDK KTM’s Wil Hahn grabbed the holeshot and led the first 2/3 of the main event. But even though he didn’t get the win, scoring his first Lites podium was a great way to finish the season. Pourcel’s Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammate, Austin Stroupe, finished in third spot.

The series takes a week off next weekend for Easter, and then moves to Seattle for the first of two races that’ll wrap up the Lites West duel between Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer and Ryan Morais. Oh yeah, and there’s that minor detail of the final three races between Reed and Stewart.
