2008 Monster Energy Supercross: Anaheim 1 Photo Gallery and Results

Want more? How about 34 photos of pit action on Saturday at Round 1 of the Monster Energy Supercross Series in Anaheim, CA?
There's also 25 photos from Friday at Round 1 of the Monster Energy Supercross Series in Anaheim, CA.

While no rain fell during Saturday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim...well, outside of a few spits of a shower, the moisture from the previous day's downpour was the big news at A1. And that was without the benefit of a big-dollar contract, a new trainer, a move up in class, or anything else that's usually grabbing the headlines at the season's first race. Even though the track was covered, and looked good on the surface, as soon as bikes hit it on Saturday night, it started to deteriorate. But that didn't make it less spectacular. Instead, it took on more of the feel of a titanic struggle of the riders agains the track.

What also made it interesting is that 7,000 yards of new dirt had been brought in for this event, so no one knew exactly what it was going to do. Check the photos and you'll see that it clumped up heavily, adding weight to the bikes, and providing a seriously greasy feel for the riders in the early races...though it definitely got tackier as the night progressed.

The big heroes of the night were Ryan Dungey and Chad Reed, who won their respective classes. The biggest surprises? Probably the speed shown by Justin Brayton and Dan Reardon in the Lites class (Brayton ended up on the podium). Least surprising was that James Stewart could come from a first turn crash to second, even in the mud.

But a wet race for the season opener probably raised as many questions as it answered, so we'll look forward to going to Phoenix next weekend, so get a better idea of what should happen for the rest of the season. Then it'll be back to Anaheim in two weeks for the retro track, and the 6,000 yards of new dirt that remain.
