Overall: Yeah, the motors on the pre-2002 CRs are bad-ss. Honda made changes in 02 and lost some of the bottom end. They tried to fix it in 05 but messed up the shape of the head, causing the 05-07 CRs to ping and detonate on pump gas. I have considered trying to wedge a 99-01 motor in my 07.

Overall: A YZ is faster, but a CR is easier to put a 144 kit on. The CR will have a little different feel than the YZ. Most peole say it is lighter and handles better. If I was you, I would try and find a KTM 144/ 150. If I had the choice I would buy a CR (even though I just sold my trusty 99 YZ125)just for the cool factor (how many people do you see racing a late model CR125). Plus for about $500 bucks you could have a cr144.
