I think I’m turning Taiwanese… I really think so!

Product Engineer Erik and I recently returned from Taiwan where we got to visit our factories, sample some of the local cousine, and view the beautiful countryside… a lot. Here is a break down of the goings on.

Factories: The International Headquarters and home of the factory where most our products are designed and produced is located in Taichung, Taiwan. This was the first time I have visited the factory and it truly was impressive and pretty cool to see everything getting produced. On one side of the facility there were stock piles of stand components and on the other end there were sweet little Taiwanese ladies bagging and placing bar pads on our bars. Everyone at Kinesis Taiwan was extremely friendly and almost over accommodating. By the end of the trip there were handing us bags of different little treats that Erik and I would probably never use.

Cousine: Everything seemed pretty edible and we did stay away from as much poultry as possible(Bird Flu). But… I found out that everything was not as edible as I had imagined by my last authentic meal. I was eating what seemed to be Miso Soup and it tasted pretty good. I was half way through my bowl and realized that what I thought were noodles was actually little 2” long fish or something else that survives in the water. What mad it worse was that the soup was like 150 degrees when they brought it out and I came to the conclusion that the poor little fishies were cooked as the sat on the table in front of me. Ewwwwwwwwww!!!!!

Countryside: I was just joking about the beautiful part. Unfortunately Taiwan is not as fortunate as the good old U S of A and everything is packed together and a bit run down. Rice patties, factories, and high rises dominate the tiny island. However, we did spend at least 10 hours of our time there driving from factory to factory in search of new vendors, so I did get plenty of time to see why I should be more grateful to be an American.

Until the next adventure,

Mike D.

FOR SALE

After four years of faithful service, we're putting our Universal trade show booth out to pasture.

The UMX bar booth can be configured in one of several designs:

• 20 x 20 peninsula

• 20 x 10 standard isle

The booth includes one backdrop, one freestanding bar, six high-back bar stools, and three custom-built crates for easy storage and transport.

The freestanding back wall features three replaceable backlit photo boxes. Each photo box includes its own florescent lighting. These photo boxes can be updated with transparent photo or logo panels to make the booth your own.

The boomerang-shaped freestanding bar is an excellent selling tool, as it puts your customers on once side and your sales team on the other. There is plenty of storage beneath the bar for catalogs, product samples, coolers, etc.

This booth has suffered virtually no structural damage in four years of faithful service, and only very minor cosmetic damage (chipped formica laminates, scratches on the bottom of the booth structure from normal setup and wear.)

This booth would make a great first booth for a growing parts company, or even a small apparel brand.

We can arrange freight via common carrier for the final buyer.

The eve of the big show…

Here we are ready to embrace another year of the Indianapolis Dealer Expo and these final 48 hours are killing us. Besides all of the good times we will enjoy with dealers, distributors, and international customers that we rarely get to see, we actually have some stuff that we have been working on for over a year and we finally get to roll it out. The highly anticipated Halo Sprockets, Atlas Bars, Pistol Grips, and factory two tone handlebars will be at the show for the collective motorcycle industry to critique and let us know their thoughts. Universal has no doubts that these products will be widely accepted by our colleagues and spread like wild fire once they hit the marketplace.

Smitty plans on meeting up with his major domestic dealers and mail order accounts and taking them out for a few wild nights of whiskey, strippers, steaks, and possibly streaking. Not sure what he plans to accomplish with the streaking, but Mike D. has vowed to capture the moment on video if it happens. Stay tuned on YouTube.com for further info.

Mike D. will be doing much of the same, but with our International clients and domestic distributors. Hopefully he will get some sleep and wash the blood and vomit of himself before the early 10:00 appointments he has set for himself. We’ll give that a 50/50 shot.

Erik and Jackle will be holding the fort in Temecula on lock down while the sales guys “entertain” customers at the trade show. However, our hours will be shortened to 9:00-4:00 PST February 16, 19, and 20 while Smitty and Mike D. are out of town.

We have attached a picture of our new Atlas Handlebar in Factory Gold for your viewing pleasure. Cheer’s to us for keeping it real!

Univesal New Year

Yo yo yo, it's 2007 already and we are crankin. I am going to go on a little rant about all of the new cool stuff we have from Products to Rider Sponsorship to New Employees, so sit tight and prepared to be wowed!

For the new year we will be rolling out our highly anticipated T-7075 Halo Sprockets and case hardened Magnum c/s sprockets. Both of these items have been thoroughly tested by the Universal squad and have proven at the track to last 30-40% longer than several of our leading competitors. Due to the multiple facets and holes cut into the sprocket they weigh within about 10 grams of the manufacturers as well. Pretty damn cool! Other items we are introducing are new two-tone color bars, bar bends, a few signature Brian Deegan products, and the Samson Bed Rack in white which you got a glance at right here on Vital MX about a month ago.

We have increased our rider promotions as well and have never had a stronger amateur and professional support program than we do now. Brian Deegan, Blake "Bilko" Williams, Matt Buyten, and Jeremy Lusk will be our front runners in freestyle while Dennis Jonon, Kevin Rookstool, Billy Swapp, and Derek Costella will lead our SX/MX program. Les Smith, Taylor Futrell, Alisa Nix, Eric Line, and Kyle Engle will be looking to capture several titles this year at the amateur national while representing the Solex and Deuce handlebar lines.

As far as employment goes, we have added the "Jackle" as our new CSR/Spelling Be Champion/Dog Trainer/Viral Marketing Manager. Besides letting her dogs crap all over the office she has been doing great and is  a true asset to the program. Mike D. remains Dark Overlord of Universal, while Smitty holds down Domestic sales, and Erik acts as Chinese Translator/Product Samurai.

That's what we got, so peace out MX fans!

Universal News November 2006
What our team has been up to... It has been an extremely busy month for the Universal crew and this month I am gonna try to let you know what each individual member of the staff here in Temecula has been doing to kick ass and make sure we keep the handlebar factory in business! Here it goes… Smitty, Inside Sales Manager:Now has 3 months under his belt and has been upgraded from FNG Sales Dude to Inside Sales Manager. Smitty is realistically a full fledged handlebar and stand selling Jedi! Do not mess with him and his knowledge on our product or he might show up at your shop with a light saber and a fresh can of whoop ass. He has been slammed with new accounts opening up all across the Southern US and is ready to do battle with our bigger competitors in 2007. Amanda, MySpace Manger/ Customer Service Representative/ Dog Trainer/ Model/ Coffee Maker Extraordinaire:She has been holding things down here in the office and keeping everybody sane. She did however get a week off in early October to go to Vegas and do some modeling for the bicycle brand GT at the Interbike Tradeshow in Las Vegas. Little did she know that they were having her sign autographs by a 20ft. tall poster of her self. Needless to say, we have been icing her swelled up head ever since trying to make it go down. Just kidding, Amanda does do a fantastic job of doing all of the odd jobs that we dump on her hear at Universal and has definitely been a much appreciated part of the team.  Erik, Product Manager:E has finalized our new Atlas oversize crossbar handlebar and it rules. These bars will be in stock as early as December and will be featured on several of our top amateur and SX racer’s bikes. Also, he has finished our Control Panels which are plexiglass number plates for our Monocoque stands. These are sure to be hot items for riders looking for that factory bling. Currently, he is working at a feverish pace to get the sprockets and grips produced before January 2007. If any of you feel the need you can call and bug him at 951-506-0142. This could also help him to speed things up.  Mike D., Brand Manager:I just got back from a trip to Europe where I had the pleasure of meeting several of our International Distributors and a gang of our FMX riders from Europe. Bart and I were at the International Motorcycle Trade Show in Cologne Germany. It was very similar to Indy, but in a far superior facility. Bart also took me around his home town Helmond in The Netherlands. I had a great time out there and we got a lot of stuff done while we were there. On a side note, I believe we helped put a sufficient dent in the supplies of Bavarian Beer while I was out there. Though, I did lose in a long awaited bout with Paul de Jong and the Hardcore Drinking Team.   That’s it for this week. Have a good rest of the month and let us know if you need anything. Mike D. and the Universal Crew

What? Your vendors didn't take you to the Ruth's Chris Steak House in downtown Taichung?

Actually, I think it's in the same pair of downtown towers where they have a little bridge that runs across the top between the two. I can't remember if we went out onto it or not...but I couldn't believe how nuts it was that anyone could walk out there.

I need to get over there and visit you guys soon...
