How much does he weigh? Good chance we needs new springs and that the stock ones are not stiff enough for him. Springs would improve the bike overall (handling, ride height, and suspension)

If it has been long enough that you are worried about the nitrogen pressure then surely the shock would also benefit from an oil service. Nitrogen is only part of the shock's function.
