I recommend the decompression valve mod for easy starting - and no more broken kick start levers!
I recommend the decompression valve mod for easy starting - and no more broken kick start levers! Thank you to Larry Wiechman for your great workmanship :) The lever broke at the base were it attaches to the shaft. Cylinder looked to be in ok condition, I sharpened the edges on the walls between the main transfer and auxiliary transfer ports. I noticed that there was some flash left over from the casting process so I had a go at cleaning it up and at the same time optimize the airflow. This is the first engine I've taken an engine apart so I didn't have much to go by other than what I could find online :s I was pretty fortunate with the frame because there was no signs of cracking and the top exhaust mount bracket was still intact. There was a fair amount of chain rub on the sub-frame though, from what I can see online this is a common problem with the big KX. The old pipe had taken a bit of a hit that caused it to foul one of the frame rails (arrow). I prefer a bare metal finish to chrome so would have been quite tempted to change it any way! Also circled is another broken bracket :( The heavy vibration had caused the mounting bracket to break off so had another one fabricated, broken brackets was a running theme on this bike!. The outer seams of the radiator were also re-welded. The old foot pegs and pins had got pretty worn and sloppy, the IMS pegs are also a little wider.

Additional Info The bike was imported from the States last year - there aren't as many 500's to choose from here in the UK, I got my hands on it in September. The condition of the bike wasn't too bad - usual problems of chain rub to subframe and a couple of broken brackets from all the vibration. The bike is actually a '99 but I wanted to make it look like a '93, I was riding a KX 60 back then and really liked the graphics - this was also the swan song year for the 500 in the nationals.

Hi Thomas, I'm embarrassed to say that so far this year the 500 has only been raced once. The reason being that something is broken in the kick start mechanism - you are unable to get a full stroke with the lever making the bike very hard to start. So it's been collecting dust while I've been racing the 250 and my downhill bike on alternate weekends.
The Honda looks awesome!! You have a KX & CR 500?! You're a made man! Do you have a preference for either bike?
P.S. Great whips, good riding buddy

Hi Pal! Sad to hear about the kickstart problem. Hope you can fix it. It took me years to have a KX & a CR 500. For the preference I cannot tell you, because I was only able to ride the CR on a track this year and the KX just the street up and down. When I remember 1991/92 the KX felt lower on the bar, but with modern bar bent's & high's I hope the KX will feel close as good as the CR does. Now we fiddle a little arround with a new seat cover, not to make "wafes" at the tank side. This will take some "nerves" but I'm shure we will figure it out. Your black rims on the KX500 look so good ..... & thanks for likeing my ride. Did you check some other gallery's @ http://www.motopark.at/ ? What do you thinks about the idea to create a "memories" ride page in timeline style like it is? Regards Thomas

Thanks bud, I really enjoyed working on it. Weird I thought you guys had a lot of Kawi 500s in the States, that's where mine came from. Have you seen the video of Sean Collier riding his 500 in the FMF 2 stoke series? AWESOME!!!

Hi Bud, yeah I took it out for the first time a couple of weeks ago - it is a MONSTER!! Really happy to say that my injury didn't cause me any problems either . I need to do something with the suspension though because it's very soft! Hope you're enjoying yours too.

    Thanks Thomas!
I'll post some pictures I took prior to the restoration and a couple more new ones soon.
Would you believe the bike has been sat in the garage not ridden since those pictures were taken back in April!! A couple of days after I took the pictures I fully ruptured my pectoral tendon and it's taken a LONG time to get over the surgery and through the physio. All ready for next season though

Hi Pal. It's always bad to hear someone has been injured. Hope you can recover 100% !!! Looks like you're a litte bit into 2 strokes? Me too - can't get off of these bikes - but have a modern KX450 too. The RM is very nice! So, kind regards Thomas
